You should also check to see if you are getting G40 pulse with an LED.... Maybe the 3B needs this as well to activate fuel pump but I doubt it. Get a 5V LED and connect across pins 2 (anode) and 3 (cathode) on the plug by teasing back the insulation. When cranking you should see the LED blink OFF every other crank revolution.
Paul: I just realized that I have a pair of 3 pin VW O2 sensor connectors that are duplicate of the G40 male/female connectors. On that basis, I could construct a G40 tester for use my local Vancouver BC UrS club (about 20 members). Do you have a diagram or something that I could use?
PM me as needed. (Thanks)

Its a piece of cake... I actually go with two LEDs - 5V variety without external resistors.
One across pins 1 & 3 to show you get 5V supply from ECU
Other across pins 2 & 3 so you can see it pulse OFF every other crank rotation
Easy enough if fiddly depending on fingers and thumbs to either solder on the LED legs or crimp 'em directly.
I have built three already - then forgot about them - might stick them on eBay to see if they tickle anyone - its a pretty generic little tester actually.
I will give that a look when I can, cheers for the offer of the g40 tester, might take you up on that. Will have to leave the car for a week or so now. Back to joyous journeys on the trains, being ripped off for tickets and delayed for hours
Finally got a free weekend to look at the car, taken bloody long enough but been way to busy with work. I have found my problem, it looks like the crank position sensor had been replaced at some point and a new one had been badly spliced into the wiring, I have found the end on the sensor, but where does the other end connect, I am guessing it is one of the four connectors on the bulkhead, 1 black, 1 white, 1 green and 1 brown does anyone know which?
Here is the call out for an AAN connector rack. Your's should be similar. (Crank sensor is black, engine speed sensor is grey).
BTW, there was zero need to splice in the crank sensor. They come as a complete unit with cable and end. Plug and play. Whoever did that should be buggy whipped.

cheers, figured her out! so nice to hear the sweet sweet sound of 5 cylinders!! looks like when the sensor was replaced it was not put into the loom and just stretched and worn its way out
