    My car has died

I've got a bit of trubble my car won't start . Got in my car tonight to pick up my girl friend from work stopped in morrisons for some bread on the way car started fine both times .anyway sat out side girl friends place of work with the engine off and when I went to go home started up my car and it stalled after a couple seconds tryed to restart and straight away it died and hasn't started since . Got a tow home and started checking things out .I have spark as when I put the ht leed from the coil and turn the engine over I have a good strong spark . I can smell fuel so am confident it is injecting fuel. There is a blink code of 2121 idle switch which I don't think would stop it starting. Started to check the timing with the flywheel mark lined up the line in the dizzy also lines up but so far as far I can see is the Mark on the cam pulley doesn't .now is the lines on bothsides of the cam pulley and are they on the same tooth as the one on the back of the pulley is nowhere in site when everything else is in line . Any thoughs what could of gone wrong . And by the way it is a 3b s2

Cams turn at half the speed of the crank so try another complete revolution of the crank till you see the zero mark cut in half in the window and check the cam marks again. Have you had the dizzy cover off and checked the mark there? Maybe the dizzy gear has failed.

this is a common problem with 3b s2,a dead rotorarm.

Yes I have the dizzy cap off . I'm glade I went the Wagner reverse I'm route as it makes taking the dizzy cap off possible. I did think first of all that I was on the wrong Stoke but the line in the dizzy lines up when the flywheel lines up. The rotor arm turns when turning the engine. If it was on the wrong stroke the line in the dizzy would be 180 deg out which it is not. At the moment I have all sorts of causes going through my head. I first thought the pin on the flywheel has gone but would it spark if it was that? If the key on the crank or cam pulley had sheared how could the line in the dizzy line up correct

he says he has spark so the gear should be fine, could be the hall sender.

you might be able to smell fuel but i'd still reckon that its something to do with that, there's another thread recently with the same symptoms. Check there is definately fuel getting to the engine. Just make sure you can cut off the fuel supply if it is working properly, brian smith nearly got soaked with fuel when something like that happened.

I was just thinking about that. How would I tell if that has failed. if it was the hall sender Would I not get any spark as it would not know when to fire. I have only pulled off the ht lead from the coil so it may be sparking but may be not at the wright time . I'll sleep on it and have a proper look at it tomorrow if I get home in the light. Thanks for the quick replies lads

right i have managed to check a few things out tonight the timing is all spot on so that can rule out cam belt, crank pully and cam pully key sheared and the gear on the end of the dizzy coming off, all good , the next thing i have tested is the see if there is power going to the feul pump whick i get 9.7 volts when trying to start the car. the battery is probably getting a bit drained now so that would be cranking voltage drop due to the starter motor. now should there be power to the fuel pump as soon as the igniton is on or does it stay on once the engine has started. checked the fuse (number 13) and again only power when turning over the engine.
                  any ideas would be grand

read this sticky first and pay special attention to fuel pump / relay stuff.

If you need help decoding 3B schematics and probing around to see WTF is happening then just shout.

thanks paul for reminding me of the sticky i even read it when you first posted it,completely forgot about checking the stickys to bizzy checking through other peoples no starts . that should be a good help to finding my fault. i am leaning towards a fuel problem as everything else checks out. the car does have a imobilizer but that was bypassed last year when i broke my last fobb. going back to the fuel part out of the 2 fuel lines going to the fuel rail which is the feed from the pump i take it the line with the fpr is the return

No. It would just cause the engine to run rich, even after warmed up, not cause a starting issue. Here is some G62 info:
