remember,i'm only going to use this k27 coldside.the bearing housing is only good for 3LDZ turbos.

i have been testing the rs2 k27 hybrid for the past week and sign's are quite promising.
i had to overcome a few problems like finding 3" hoses from turbo down to 2"MAF then 2.5" to 2"intercooler.
with little tweaks here and there i think this will make a nice turbo.
although the spool up(loads of turbo lag) is very slow,it seem to go on forever(unlike the rs2 which would have been gasping for air) and ever.i think with slightly larger and lighter compressor wheel with superback to aid quicker spool up,this might turnout to be even better than i anticipate.
under normal driving, this seem to have a massive torgue in any given gear and actually feels smooth and progressive.and because of this i seem to forget to change gear sometimes.
i really do like the feel of this turbo, just need to get it to spool up a little quicker.

Interesting David. Do you have estimates on figures for this turbo? Where are you seeing full boost in 3rd? I'm going to be replacing my current K26/7 shortly, hoping for 400-420hp with full boost ~3800rpm in 3rd. I'd be interested to know where your hybrid comes in at.

the first few test i done was just to foundout if this hybrid would work at all and
funny enough, boost seem to come just before 4000rpm and estimate power will be close to 450.
i would say 3800rpm is achievable, and my next test will be to log some figures.

Ross: You should consider a K26/27/29 with either a #6 exhaust housing for quick spool or #8 exhaust housing for more power.

after another test the signs are very promising, the turbo starting to act like the rs2 unit, boost coming in around 3800rpm and seem to go on forever.
just waiting for some silicon boost hoses to come in as i feel this might eliminate any leak.

By way of comparison... looking at some recent boost logs from an RS2 turbo'd S2 running V-stream and Wagner IC, customised for 0.8bar WG spring and spooling aggressively as it can...

                              In a 4th gear pull starting ~1850rpm
it goes positive boost before 1900
                              its making 0.4bar at 2400
                              0.8bar at 2750
and hits max target of 1.8bar before 3300... not aimed for 1.9bar on it yet but it shouldnt struggle to make that

Obviously it wont have the headroom for boost levels as high as K26/27/29 but for low-mid range grunt its pretty nice. It can approach 400bhp when running with injectors larger than RS2 as well.

Thats not to pour cold water on the purpose of this thread in experimenting with other/older turbo - its just to remind everyone that turbo choice is a series of compromises... you cannot have one that spools instantly and has headroom for 1000bhp.

i agree with totally there Paul, like you said this is all about experimenting with otherwise discarded old turbo.it all about choice really, some like fast spool up with not much power at the top.others go for more midrange power and what i'm after really is to have both the rs2 spool up with more topend power.
early signs are good, just need to tweak it little and might have a nice hybrid turbo.
