TBH they look perfect (there might be a tiny score on one) I take it you had good oil pressure?Comment
-
Thanks I've never seen these things before hence I was wondering about their condition.
The pressure had always been good. I'm looking for a reason why the engine sounded unhealthy before I took it off the road.
I found a little metallic chip in the oil pick up mesh earlier. I'll pull the pistons and have a look at the small ends tomorrow
. Also have to open the oil pump and check the tolerances etc.
No big damage found sofar and the head looks good too. confused.comShaneComment

They look good.
Why are you stripping the engine down anyway?
In comparison, some from the 7a I removed from my 80q avant;
Mains

Big ends

These ones are worn right through the white metal coating

And these are completely fubar

And the result on the crank

@ Andy10v I've seen high-mileage-ragged-to-death pinto engines with better condition shells!
@ S2 WOT, Best to replace them all and polish the crank. The bearing shells on my Avant looked very similar to yours; The worst shell on mine was front pulley main in the block casting. Don't get me wrong the originals are in remarkable condition, but if your going to keep the car it's best to do for peace of mind.Comment

i am wondering if the 7a ones had anything to do with non balanced crank to flywheel etc or flywheel beeing single mass.
i am going to be changing my rod bearings only next time(next year that is) as part of the engine service. They will have done about 150K kms by then since rebuilt.
However if i do find that they have quite a bit of wear, i may be replacing the dual mass flywheel to reduce any hints of vibrations.Comment

Vasilis how many kms are you doing with your car a year??

i have done about 100ish now
i presume that i may be in Greece next April, so roughly about 40ish till then. I have a journey planned in Geneve in June and a few around the UK as well, so kms climb quite a bit! Actually, it may be premature to replace them, but if i dont, then the next opportunity may be well beyond the safe kms, especially for a 450+engine. So id rather be safe than sorry!Comment
