    Catastrophic engine failure

Well everything we all fear has just happend to my coupe. Driving along in traffic of boost and bang, smoke and bits and pieces seen in the rear view mirror, coasted out of gear to a stop thinking I had lost a hose, or oil cooler, or something similar, as the engine was still running on what seemed to be 3 cylinders.Turned the car of and found parts of a conrod, and bits of block, plus oil and water everywhere.
I found bits of block on both sides of the engine, and a completetly severed conrod complete with small end gudgen pin.
I have at this moment no idea of how much damage has been done to the head, but I am sure it will be damaged beyond repair along with the rest of the engine.
So that said its time for an inquest hopefully to find out why this happened and to guard against it happening to others in the future.,
    Starting with a breaf history.
The car is a 3b coupe with a replacement ann bottom end, and refurbished s2 head,
RS2 turbo, manifold and injectors 3inch down pipe and exhaust,7a fpr, 044 fuel pump
and MRC remap, oil changed every 2ooo ml and bills in exsess of £27000.
All the modes where quite recent including a brand new turbo which blew after a few hundred miles, and had to rebuilt, but thats another story,or may be it was the start of this current problem.
For the future referance of others it would be good to hear from any one who has suffered an engine failure.
We are all aware of the problems of cam belt failure, bottom pulley failure, and the so called spark hop,but I do not think any of these where the cause of my problems.
My reasons for thinking this are the problems MRC had mapping the car.Mihnea who I have great faith in could not get the car to make power, even though the car was produceing more boost than an RS2 and holding it to the red line with no problems he could not get the tourqe and bhp figures up to what he thought they should be.
This was not for want of trying, first sesson started at 9am and finished at 11pm,and the second took 7hrs resulting in a drivable car with reasonable and safe power.
The main problem in the first sesson was knock, which we put down to the origanal air box and a restrictive exhaust,so I fitted a RS2 airbox and a 3in down pipe and exhaust
which did help. When I take the engine out I will know more and post some pictures.
In the mean time I am in the market for another engine so if anyone has anything to offer I am very interested,my faith is definatly waining, I am not ready to give in just yet,but I am now of to get pissed

not good sorry to hear that.

it may have spun a main bearing. i had my car on the dyno not making much power not long later the engine seized because the rod bearing on number 3 had spun and welded itself to the crank.and con rod. The con rod didnt snap it was at low rpm and not under load. still made a banana out of it. so in your case it may have had enough force to snap the rod ect...

just a thought from my experience.

      good luck.

        Sh*t that sounds bad.

Sorry to hear about the troubles Lou. That is enough to test anyones faith in an S2. Hopefully the post mortem might reveal what went wrong.

I think I would be reduced to tears if mine had such an epic failure.

Let me know if you need a hand with it.

friend i am very sorry to hear it.

your car is 90% the same as mine,3B with new parts like RS2 turbo,3" turboback sistem,7A FPR,Wagner EVO EM,....

do you know if your car was runing fine recently???

do you can show us some pictures of the damage???

personally i am using 2.0bar of boost in 4 & 5 gears ,since 3500rpm and after 5300rpm it drops to 1.5bar redline , it seems to have nice AFR and EGT values....

my cylinder head was skimed at least 2 times, and i installed it with ARP bolts + wider metal head gasketthat drops compression ratio to 8.8:1 and everything together seems to be working fine ATM

ah¡¡ my cylinder head was ported/polished by me,but only the intake ducts....i dont know if i did it right or not...but for the moment works

i am thinking on wich were your problems in your engine failure

Sorry for your loss. We wait in anticipation of the "post mortem" as to what the cause might have been.

In the interim, I can relate the story of a similar episode on my side of the Pond:
A local UrS4 owner had his AAN almost fully RS2'd (everything but exhaust cam) along with software that was a combination of MTM and SMS. The software was very aggressive and the engine pinged (pinked) like crazy under boost. The pinging could be tamed with the addition of toluene to the gasoline (about 9 L toluene in with 71 L of 94 ((RON+MON)/2). On the dyno this car made 317 whp, the most of our local UrS club ( http://forums.audiworld.com/showthre...=squamish+dyno).

The owner didn't drive it that hard or, if he did, he never stayed in the boost that long to cause problems. Eventually, he bought an S8 and sold the 94 UrS4. The new owner hammered that engine almost from the get go and not too long into the ownership, the engine ended up like this:

My *suggested* moral of the story: Don't ignore pinging (pinking), it is a sign of an issue and should be addressed before disasterous consequences are reached.

                    Epilogue:

The 94 UrS4 was saved and sold to a well known UrS owner who has added a mega HP engine to it and is happy.
