Having finally got my new dizzy........This may sound a bit dumb to those pros out there but how is it aligned?....
Does is have to be set with the engine tdc?
Any help please!!!
Mike
p.s on the plus side manifold and pipe polished....
Mike,
yes, the engine needs to be at TDC, take the dizzy cap off, insert the dizzy in the head, then turn the dizzy body round till the notch in the side of it lines up with the rotor arm (or the arrowed mark in this pic)

Cheers.....juts been down halfords to get correct fitment to turn crank.....where abouts is the tdc marking i found the white mark but cant find the part to align with..is it the notch out from the curve......?????
mike
There is a line on the crank pulley which lines up with a mark on the lower cambelt cover, and if you remove the upper cambelt cover, there is a dot punched into the cam pulley which lines up with the mark on the cam cover.
I got everything back together now......and it still WONT START! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I cant think of anything i missed....everything pluged in and bolted and torqued.
Could i have the vacume hoses on the back of the IM on in the wrong order.
You know those three, one from boost guage, other two from some where else
I wanted to get it all running and the b4 Audi international! But i stumped it should just turn over now.
I'm getting fuel into the rail i know that i checked!
Really need to know why i wont fire. I really dont feel like taking the IM off again!
It shouldnt matter which way round the 3 vacum pipes go, they all go into the IM anyway,
are you sure you've got the dizzy set right, and your leads on the correct way round, ie, engine at TDC, rotor arm pointing to the notch in the dizzy, this is now pointing to no 1 cylinder so make sure the lead for no 1 is in this position, then follow the firing order, going clockwise round the cap, 1-2-4-5-3
it will turn over but wont start......ive checked the alignment tdc and dizzy ok....but now i cant get the bottom ****ing clip to the dizzy back on! But everything there is ok i also checked the lead they are ok.
Ihave no idea what to do!
More news...i checked that the rotor arm was actually turing and it is. But i'm not getting any spark! Why would there be no spark other than the dizzy not rotating?
Not sure how to check if i'm getting an injector pulse.
Hi!,
Did you make sure that the engine was on the compression stroke for number one? Don't forget that the crank turns twice for every camshaft rotation. Its difficult to see, but I would use the marks on the flywheel, visible through the aperture in the gearbox, for engine TDC and the dot on the camwheel itself and the arrow on the rocker cover, under the timing belt cover.
Have you ensured that the hall sender connector(the one on the side of the dizzy) is fully home. Once in haste I didn't push this home enough although it looked on. Make sure to depress the clip when pushing the connector on.
Other than that, I suggest you follow the instructions on Paul's site to pull the fault codes. Believe me it's easier if the car tells you whats wrong!
Good Luck!
It maybe something else tho. Is there a spark from the coil?? If you take the coil lead out of the dizzy and use some plastic pliers to hold the lead about 15mm away from a good earth point( away from fuel!), and then get someone to crank it over. You should get a spark. Try checking resistances of the coil and check the voltages going to it.

There is a more accurate way of timing it up too, under the rotor arm is a plastic 'sheild' type thing. Take that off and there is another scribed line that lines up with the one on the dizzy body. BTW those cap clips are a real sod to do.
I would also use the mark on the back of the engine. (right hand side as you look at the car) This is more accurate. Be warned that there are two marks on it. Use the one with a '0' next to it. And as Robin said, make sure the cam is also at TDC and not 180 degs out

Well i rotated the crank 360 and set up the dizzy again. But i'm not getting any spark! And i dont know why everything is pluged in! This is really doing my head in.
If i take out the fuse for the ignition timing should there be any difference?
Could it be something to do with my immobiser? I had it removed off the ignition barral cause it was a pain, but i never had any trouble before.
I cant think if anything else may be it's the coil?
