    coolant block socket, lucky escape!!

my radiator developed a leak, so when I dropped the coolant to renew it I decided to change the rear block coolant socket and also change the small hose behind the thermostat to a silicone one as I have read on here about both being a weak link.
I already had purchased a K24R Alloy Coolant Block Pipe ("Socket") from Rusty for the just in case box, well good job I did.

when I undid the allen bolt the socket came with it and fell off leaving this part in the block!.

great job there, glad you caught it in time - no need to speculate on the results of not catching that one

Please can you email me the picutres - I don't have any of it in situ and wouldn't mind seeing it from different angles. If it would be OK, I'll add them to the sale thread too

The advantages of my replacement socket are that it's the right size for the old hoses and it won't corrode, as it's hard anodised aluminium, unlike the Audi steel item.

Was the allen bolt loose? It looks like it might have loosened, thus allowing the pipe to vibrate and fracture that joint!

I swapped mine the other week, it was in OK condition but anyone who remembers me getting my face scaulded in 2008 will have been warned that plastic parts in the cooling system can become very weak and dangerous. I was lucky not to get hurt but the same failure on track would have had severe consequences for me and anyone driving through 6 litres of coolant! I'm pleased to have a fairly new radiator too, that's always a worry

Good save. That plastic definitely gets brittle with time and will break as you found out. However, just to be clear, that part is called an "adapter" not socket.

Here it is for the 3B/ABY:

      And here for the AAN

Here is the adapter in real life on an AAN:

Original unlabeled photo courtesy of Tom S. (RS2America)

      The old Audi 100s, e.g. 1987, had a metal adapter, PN 034121143

The small (2", 50 mm -ish long) hose between the block nipple behind the thermostat housing is Item 30 in the first diagram above, PN 034121063C, as shown in its application (in this case AAN) below. Note: the turbo coolant return line hose, also shown in this photo is one that will let go without warning as well.

Well, in the interests of being clear, it's called a socket on the family album -

Interesting, the "adapter" diagrams came from my friend Kate. I guess she is not up to date with the latest lingo.

The name difference is down to the language option in etka, we use the english option, if you use US english it changes some words

I will get some more pictures tomorrow and send them you Andy.

The allen bolt was tight, as soon as I cracked it the socket/adapter was wobbling on the bolt and just fell off.

Just checked with my friend Kate and said, "Would you mind terribly if I asked you to speak the Queen's English". She said "Not a bother" and before you can say Bob's your uncle, there we have it, "connector socket".

Shucks, and here I thought 'Mericun English had all the correct terms.

Hmm... There is no Canadian English so now I don't know what to tell Kate to do.

Regardless of what it called, it's a great bit of kit that fits perfectly, imo everyone should buy one now and fit it, or put it their shelf so that when the oem part breaks always at an inopportune time, they have this replacement part immediately to hand.

NCTS, but I think Rusty is to be encouraged and, as mentioned, it is a perfect piece.

                              HTH.

                              Kind regards.
