    RS2 - Engine Hesitation

    Hi,

I have a problem with the RS2 at present. When accelerating hard it seems to splutter/hesitate at around 4500 rpm. It will do this in pretty much every gear, however if you slowly accelerate through the revband, it appears to be OK. The car is running on Shell V Power. NB Once it gets over the hesitation it absolutley flies.

I need to get this sorted now as it did it today during overtaking. Any ideas on what to look at and check?

Definitely sounds like an ignition problem around peak cylinder pressure, so check the plugs, as mentioned above, and check the connectors that sit on top of the plugs. check these with a multimeter.

How do you check them with a multimeter?

Test the resistance with the ohm meter. supposed to be approx 5K Ohm if I remember correctly (it is printed on them)

I put some more Super Unleaded in today and changed the plugs...........and it's still the same.

Tomorrow I'll do the resistance check and report back. I presume that if the resistance is greater than 5K then the coil is open circuit and therefore knackered?

              Are these expensive?

Sounds like a coil or POS channel to me, if plugs didn't cure it.
4500 is pretty much torque peak.

Alternatively you could be running too rich or too lean - hard to check that without WBO2.

It sounds like an issue Ive had with two cars, dying fuel pumps both times.

The other thing to check is coilpack (sparkplug) rubber boots. Are these in good condition? If not these will earth HT to the head causing misfiring...

                      Cheers,

Its most your mass meter, from what your saying i put my money on your mass meter being faulty/damaged. i had exactly the same issue last week where when i was putting my foot down the car was hesitating as if it was starved of air, then suddenly after a certain point i got full power.

If you know of someone close by with an RS2 just swap it over to test, they are quite expense to replace.

Lots of experiences here to draw on.. from my own, with MAF issues it's been a hard cut rather that hesitation; I had that under load and it was ignition - one time POS and the other a tiny nick in the boot as Steve suggested. The latter was fixed with some insulation tape.
