    starter questions

I'm finishing up my i5 20vt to 944 swap and discovered that the starter is dead. I can just replace it with another one, but I would like to know if there are any compatible units that either have the solenoid on the bottom or have a remotely mounted solenoid. Just looking to get some more distance between the downpipe and the starter since I have to replace it. Thanks for the help.

    94 UrS4 V8 6 spd manual avant

so I guess that audi doesn't have a unit with either a remote solenoid or solenoid facing the ground when installed?

The solenoid is integral to the operation of the starter motor as it engages the drive pinion in the flywheel as well as switching the motor current.

To use a remote solenoid you'd have to try and find an old fashioned starter motor that uses an inertia type pinion for engagement that would fit.

Given how handy you are at welding, the simplest solution may be to part the starter motor housing just behind the mounting flange, rotate by 90 degrees or so and weld back up.

that is an interesting idea about cutting and rewelding. I will look at that closer, thanks for the idea.
