    Turbo rebuild question

If you had a Garret ball bearing turbo rebuilt and they told you it needed a new bearing cartridge, does this mean this part

Or is the bearing cartridge something that fits inside that casting?

it should be the part on the photo.

it means all the centre section needs to be replaced, in other words a practically new turbo

That is what i was told recently by turbodynamics regarding mine. Also they have no real means of testing other than checking the clearances..

That was pretty much my understanding. I've just got my turbo back from a well respected turbo shop where they told me they had replaced the centre section or bearing cartridge. On checking the turbo I've found that the centre section has NOT been changed, it's the same one I sent to them, it's just been cleaned. Not happy

Be careful before you get too angry, I was under the impression that you can actually change the bearing cartridge...

They can be rebuilt as I know of people that have done it.

I suspect most choose not too for warranty reasons, yours might well be done.

Yes, bearing cartridge can be replaced, but usually broken cartridge does destroy center section when it goes.
All quattro products have been dermatologically tested, and are safe for daily use.

To answer my original question, yes, the bearing cartridge is something that fits inside that machined casting, and yes it can be replaced. The only reason to replace the whole housing is if the bearings have broken up and damaged the housing. In my case the oil seal had probably been changed before and had worn a groove in the bearing cartridge, meaning that even if they replaced the seals it would still leak. Replacing just the bearing cartridge is about £200 cheaper than replacing the whole housing.

Now to put it back together AGAIN
