    Help: RS2 timing problems

Just had the timing belt replaced today.
All seemed fine for the first 2 miles, now I'm getting pretty loud tapping/knocking from the engine bay... (increases frequency with revs)
What's the chances they've botched up the timing? Or could it be something less sinister that is knocking?
Performance seems fine, just a noisy engine bay.
I'm just paranoid that valves are mashing pistons.

I think you've answered your own question, yes it is possible they've wrecked your engine..
      Are they an Audi specialist?
Did they replace all the parts you're supposed to replace? (sprockets, water pump etc)
Did they use the correct holding tools to torque up the crank nut?

They are a specialist. They only replaced the belt and the tensioner.

Not much of a specialist then!

You can get the timing 1 tooth out and it will not cause the valves to hit pistons, a few people on here have had this, it just won't boost correctly. If your saying it drives normally this may not be the case.

When I first started the car up and left it idling (i revved it a bit) there was no strange noises. They only startes couple of minutes/miles later.
I'd've thought that if timing was screwed then it would've been broken from the start?... or is that just wishful thinking?

@Newsh: What exactly 'should' be replaced with the timing belt?

GT500 did mine just before xmas.

Belt, bottom sprocket that has woodruff key at rear, water pump, thermostat.
              Pulley tensioner.

Rob said no need to replace crank bolt, because of size, can take lots of abuse.

The keyways on the crank sprocket and cam sprocket are prone to failure, especially if the nuts are undone or done up with an impact wrench, they must be locked with the correct tool and done to the correct torque. Inspection of the keys on the sprockets for any signs of cracks is paramount but TBH its just better to replace them. The water pump can often fail after doing the belt because of the tension of the new belt, better to change it and leave alone for another 70k..

                  Problem solved.
Garage took a look over it, and found that the crank pulley bolts were loose.

New bolts, and all is well.

                  Thanks!

I guess the monkey lads in the shop had too many pints at lunch.

Dear me. Where do these people come from, and why haven't they been brained with a jack handle?

Yup. I never used to replace the pulley routinely, but I'm moving towards that now. Everything is getting old and tired.

Yes, you got really lucky, the bolts could have dropped right out and that would have been the end of your engine!

That's a good one Phil, looks like the bolt came loose.

Here's the pulley from my Avant at the last belt change at 130k (probably only its second belt change from new..) I'm really glad I drove it carefully till the belt was done, I just had a feeling about it.. Turns out the key was hanging on by a thread

I would ask the garage how well they inspected the pulleys.
