    Turbo still not finalised ?

After all my reading and posting, on which turbo to use, I'd decided on a Garrett GT3071 with a .63.

Want to use the car in the city with fast spool up and reliability as priorities.

Will have the "usual choice" mods, RS2 airbox Wagner front inlet & matching RS2 evo intercooler, rods, first overbore pistons, so approx 2226 cc, JP head, injectors, RS2 exhaust manifold (2.75 inch?), and Miltek 3" RS2 exhaust. Custom chip from S2Central.

So now flicking around I see this with the comment that it spools better than the 3071 and makes more power ? Says it's a more modern design and it's less expensive than a 3071 ?

The quicker spooling appeals, don't really require the extra power. 420'ish with quick spool every day, all day would be fine.

Any comments or experiences, either way ?

    Thanks.

      0.63 A/R is too small for 3071R.
You really need to have the engine flowing very well, otherwise it'll surge in high gears, and to map out the surge you'll have to map out some of that spool...

      Is your engine stock?

Doesn't sound stock to me! David is it my old 3B head that went to Corey's, got sold to Mark and then went to JP's that your using? Should be awesome, flowed well before anything was done to to it

Sounds like you're in the same boat as me, turbo & injector dilemma

Can't give any experiences on the turbo but it all seems a bit loose to me - how much earlier spool, and is that with the journal bearing of the $550 extra for the triple bearing? Plus it looks like it's T3 so won't work with the RS2 EM...

My experience with the GT3071 was that it was great once mapped and working, as PRJ said surging was an issue although I'd be interested to see how a stage #2 head helps that.

For reliability and mid-range, an RS2 or 'warmed over' RS2 turbo has always been a tempting prospect. The 3071 promises much but reliability, due to the oil restrictor for one thing, and having to map to account for mid-range surging would be 2 worries of mine with that particular item. A while ago it's all I wanted, now I'd look elsewhere.

Personally, I'd go for a turbo that made the car drive well, rather than one that promises much on paper but delivers a less than ideal driving experience. If older technology gives me a turbo that's more suited to the car and gives a little less in the way of pub figures but is more reliable and drives really well, then so be it.

Just to add to the mix.. had a good read of this today:

              Borg Warner EFR Technical Brief

Look good, expensive though - who's going to pioneer one of these then?

What it got me thinking about though, is if a hybrid can be made utilising the ETT compressor wheels? I'm thinking the K24-7400 but a size up. The "Airwerks S200SX-50" seems to be such a thing, not water cooled though and with a T3 flange. I'm wondering if a hybrid can be built utilising a 'stock fit' water-cooled centre housing (like my soon to be retired K26/7 hrbrid).

Otherwise, I think - like above - it's an 'RS2+' hybrid for me; easy to fit and suited for the engine, no surge issues, exhaust mods or club hammering the chassis to fit the hotside...

PRJ, Hoffer76 and s2central.net are all working on setups for similar 'kit' and power to what you're talking about, I'd be looking to get something plug and play that's been used before and thus has the kinks ironed out of it and bolts up nicely.

I might be wrong here but fitting a stock airbox with the 3071 is somewhat tight, if it's possible at all. Worth thinking about this when choosing srtuff

I think I'd also go for a custom 3" DP and 100cpi sports cat on your setup and a Wagner RS2 Evo EM. The reverse inlet has its own IC - it's not the RS2 Evo item.

@Dave - ask diesel des for the spec he has on his 2871R - that thing blows like mad for 400bhp and it didnt surge on AAN camshafts. I already have a good baseline turbo chip for that to go nicely - then it's a matter of checking afr, egt and that she doesnt knock on quality irish petrol (not).

why you want to use a sport cat?? just open it,and weld it out on a direct straight 3" pipe, and it will looks oem

                              David,

Reliable 450-480 hp, with GT3071R-ish spool can be had from a HX35 Super profile with billet wheel and fairly small exhaust housing.
                              To that a tubular manifold...

Or as far as bolt on solutions go - K26/K27. The GT3071R only has a large advantage power over the K26/K27 if you go 0.82 A/R... otherwise it's about the same with slightly quicker spool.
