ok i have been have been having a problem with getting vaccum in my fuel tank to the point where it eventually squeeks, I have removed the carbon canister and pipe and now have the tank venting to atmosphere from the pressure regulator in the back but I am still having a problem and guessing the little fuel regulator is sticking.

How do i go about testing fuel pressure?

one other thing, could the knock sensor be retarding the timing and putting less fuel in then it being seen at the lambda?

The knock sensor does not do anything, it's a microphone.

Until you figure out why your car is running mega lean, I'd avoid pushing it. Tightening down the wastegate spring is the worst you can do in this issue.

Looks simply like the wrong MAF here folks !

Correct Audi part number for 3B is 034-133-471 K (same on ABY and AAN).
Bosch number for this same part is 0-280-213-007

A '200 quattro' maf could be from a different engine entirely - not necessarily the 3B version.

Only suitable plug and play alternative is RS2 MAF 034-133-471 N or Bosch 0-280-213-017

If the MAF signal isnt what the ECU expects then its going to run oddly.

Or do these '986' codes from Bosch signify a remanufactured item ?

This random german parts site would seem to imply that - http://www.autoteile-direkt24.de/sho...senmesser.html

Sorry for any confusion as I am not up on all of the wonders of Bosch part numbering schemes.

Thats not an Audi number... try a MAF swap with anyone local... only takes a few mins to swap em over.

Yeah i know it is just finding someone, I am going down to the mrc meet so hopefully I can get a swap done then, I have just checked the resistance of the wire in the maf and i seem to be getting around the 1.8 ohm figure and i was thinking it needed to be nearer 1

forget that... you need mega precision on those kind of measurements... if you have a multimeter though...

see what DC volts you get between pins 3 and 2 on the MAF with key ON, then engine idling

1.44 with ignition on and 2.55 with engine running seeing about 13.8 between pins 1 and 5 with engine running

Tried a working new maf today and it made no difference to how the car is running so that is another thing ticked off the list, any ideas what route i go down now?

did you try to remove pipe from wastegate, and make your engine to fuel cut?
that mean that your car will run without regulation on wastegate.. be careful because you can make 1.5bar in 1. gear ok.. but in 2.gear defenetly .. and take a look how fast can they produce 1.5bar. it must be very fast.
because the turbo and boost are full mehanical , only N75, bad or stuck wastegate , boost leak , or restriction in exhaust pipe can make a low boost . NOTING ELSE ..

go and remove that pipe from lower chamber on wastegate, put something (bolt) in that vakum pipe which came from wastegate. wastegate will be full closed and you must get full boost and than fuel cut.
if you can make the fuel cut, your wastegate, exhaust, are good, there NO boost leak..
                                go and try.
