We brought ours back from Pulborough to Worthing about 14 miles, a couple of months ago with no Alternator output (voltage reg failure) and it made it home fine, the AA chap said he'd followed a bloke home from London to Sussex before now, but even he agreed that was a bit nerve wracking...

I purchased my 2.3 10V Coupe with a damaged alternator from a freind in Manchester and drove it back too Brecon (120 miles) on the battery. He followed me in my Golf GTi and we swapped batterys halfway, which got me back. I was expecting to have to do a few swaps but one didi it!!! The battery even had enough go to start the car again the next morning to move it round at home.

Sounds familiar. A couple of years ago, a couple of UrS4 friends were coming home from an UrS get-together when one of them had their alternator fail about 400 miles from home (this was in the USA and home was in Canada, near Vancouver). They got home by swapping batteries every so often (maybe every hour or so).

                    Well done.

I also drove my cq20v for 50 miles without an alternator belt, after it snapped. Unfortunately it was at night, so I needed lights, and I finally came to a halt 3 miles from home. The voltage dropped to 8V, and the car wasn't happy about it, lots of misfires at low revs just before it gave up.

I'm just thankful these cars have separate V-belts. I've had each belt fail on their own, and still been able to continue. Imagine breaking a serpentine ribbed belt.

The battery swapping trick is a good one, if you're lucky to have friends with you.

I've made 200 miles before with no alternator on a tdi avant same as yours, engine would still start off the ignition and run afterwards no sweat, only thing that wouldn't was the HID's as there wasn't enough battery power to kick the ballasts to life. I'd quite happily do a 200+ mile journey without the alternator

l reg 1.9tdi estate really was no issue, they don't drain hardly any power as its a mechanical fuel pump

Had that happen once on the V6 TDi donkey - luckily just a mile from home - first time I ever saw water temps above 90 on that motor...
