Interesting. He opens up the return channels so it comes back faster?

You would have to ask Repo for details

It's more like something restricting the feed up.

My quess for the restrictor is a threaded plug (with a small hole) in the oil feed channel to the head. Japanise drift and race cars like skylines seem to run with 1-2mm restrictors depending on how they are used, even on the street. Who wants to test what size works with Audi?

You can also help the oil to return to sump by doing some porting and grinding work with head's oil return channels. Block side is ok, but there are some improments you can do on the head side. But that's basic race engine building tricks, nothing new stuff.

i would say this thread needs an experienced distinction between what is needed for what use. Surely i cannot believe that a street used I5 needs all those modifications, as otherwise we would be seeing/hearing about multiple problems with oil starvation. Most people here suggesting extreme modificatioins admit that they see most issues on drag racing and track use. So can we clarify for us mortals?

So far i understand that a simple baffle in the sump is enough for street use. Am i right?

Can you explain exactly how it works as I have one to fit and could do with some guidance from someone with experience of them

I'm sure the info will be useful to I5 owners too.

For anyone that may doubt these they are used in BTCC as dry sumps were banned, combined with a well baffled sump its the next best thing to a dry sump without the huge costs involved in sorting one.

The yanks for once are way ahead of us using them the problem I had when looking into them is just where the hell do you fit it in the engine bay
                Nice solution earlier though!

Maybe behind the intercooler at the bottom?

                  o what's an Accusump ?

The Accusump, the original automotive oil accumulator, is designed to provide the engine with oil pressure before the starter is even engaged.

An Accusump is a cylinder shaped aluminum storage container that acts as a reservoir of pressurized oil, to be released when there is a drop in the oil pressure.

The Accusump is connected to the pressure side of an engine's oiling system and is charged by the engines own oil pump.

Its simple, efficient design revolves around a hydraulic piston separating an air pre-charge side and the oil reservoir side.

On the oil side of the Accusump it has an outlet that goes into the engine's oiling system, controlled by a valve.

On the air side it's equipped with a pressure gauge and a Schrader air pre-load valve.

                  How does an Accusump work?

On initial start-up when the valve on the oil side is opened the pressurized oil is released into the engine and therefore pre-lubricating the engine prior to start-up.

The Accusump holds whatever oil pressure the engine has at the time that it is shut off.

After the engine is started and the oil pump has taken over, oil is pumped back into the Accusump.

This moves the piston back and pressurizes the Accusump until it equalizes with engine's oil pressure.

While driving, if the engine's oil pressure is interrupted for any reason, the Accusump releases its oil reserve again, keeping the engine lubricated until the engine's oil pressure comes back to normal.

This release of oil could last from 15 to 60 seconds, depending on the size and speed of the engine.

In racing or hard driving conditions, the Accusump will automatically fill and discharge when needed as you corner, accelerate and brake.

Increasin the oilpan volume with a few liters would propably also do some good for oil starvation. Well, the quality of the oil would last longer when the volume is bigger, lets say 4,5l -> 8l. Easy diy work... propably a must do thing at some point if you won't go for a dry sump system.

why would you want it in the engine bay when it you dont haved to?

electric or manual valve doesnt matter, either you open/close the valve by hand or open/close it with a switch, no difference in funktion. sure you can make it more complicated if you want to, but you dont need to. check out accusump.com for details

What do you think of these flaps?

allow the oil return to be partially closed on hard left turns
