    Tuned Hybrid RS2

Back in December 2010, my original turbo expired whilst hooning it around Brands Hatch. I wasn't sure what was wrong exactly, apart from my turbo began making a nasty whistling noise. It turned out part of one of the hot side turbine blades had cracked through and disapeared down the exhaust! Not good.

Wanting to keep the OEM look, but also looking for the best performance for my buck, I fitted a Hoffer Hybrid RS2 turbo. I also fitted a set of Hoffers generic off the shelf chips.

Here's the plot of that setup; 375 BHP and 544 NM - thanks Rich!

My 3b nearly finshed has a similar / same set-up done by Richard, nice job done on the turbo.

Just need my exhaust completing to get it back on the road. How much better did your car feel after the upgrade ?

Two weeks ago, I picked Dmitri (PRJ) up from Luton airport and we headed down to Bournemouth to see Rich (Hoffer76). The aim was to give my car a proper custom tune and see how far Rich's hybrid RS2 turbo could go....

As it turned out, we didn't start tuning until around 11.30pm on a Friday night. Dmitri had forgotten some of his USB leads, so a quick trip to the 24Hr Tesco's was needed to stock up on essential kit. Never thought I would be so pleased to go to a Tescos at 11pm!

Anyway, with the pressure on (I was going away on holiday early the next morning) we got started. Four hours later, Dmitri was happy with the finished result. The final tune was running less boost with considerably more timing than the previous generic chip. As a safety precaution, because I do a few track days a year, Dmitri wound the final tune back a little to give a bit more safety headroom.

Here's the dyno result; 392 BHP & 577 NM Happy Days

Many thanks to Dmitri for a massive late night top notch tuning effort and of course Rich for making it all happen. I'm delighted and am looking forward to taking the car to Spa at the end of the month for a mega track fest.

Lloyd, that's a great result and a sensible choice on turbo - 3600rpm is a nice, early peak torque, with near 400hp, a good all-rounder. It certainly felt responsive - the handling scared the hell out of me; that car is a top class weapon on the twisties

Feels fantastic. More top end power than with the generic chipset. Whereas the generic chip would give a big surge of midrange torque and then feel relatively flat at the top end, this custom tune feels strong throughout.

I really am delighted - thanks again Dmitri & Rich.

@Ross; Thanks, it really is handling well. My aim was to have a setup that was the optimum compromise for fast road/track day use. I'm really happy with the current balance and feel of the car - not sure there's much more I can do to further improve it on track, without carrying a road comfort penalty. So much grip now and corners like it's on rails. Understeer is almost entirely dialed out and overall it's really neutral.

@Rocco; thanks also. Plenty of power to keep me happy for a while, although I'm really looking forward to reading more about Ross's current tune and the confirmed numbers it's gonna put out - gonna be a fair bit bigger!!

you can tell that from the torque as well on the graphs. Although at 6500rpm its the same (400Nm) earlier on, the setup from prj gives more torque.

                      Good results Lloyd!

Yup, more torque with less boost - so less EGT's, less IAT, and much better for track use. Before with that timing and boost the EGT's and IAT's climb fairly quick, so it was stressing the turbo and the engine a lot more.

I am glad that you like it Lloyd, and that is a very nice number for a RS2-ish turbo. Remember though guys - a stock RS2 turbo will never make this kind of power.

                        P.S.
The difference on the dyno graph between the two runs looks like about 5-10 degrees of IAT, so about 0.75 deg less timing and less air.

In his file the injectors are set as 480cc.
So I guess it was Delphi blue bands.

The duty cycle % on this car would not tell the truth though, as there is a little bit of fuel pressure taper up top, so I had to enrich by 0.3-0.4 points there, thus the duty is higher than it should be.
This is normal for a RS2 stock fuel pump, as these start to do this at 380+ hp.

However, there is very little taper, so this is safe to run as is, and even a brand new RS2 fuel pump will do exactly the same (have experienced this many many times now).
