Yup, it will do one of those, since due to the bad contact it will jump around.
With a boost leak it won't throw codes though. Only "maximum boost pressure exceeded" after you hit the fuel cut.

Armed with this information if you pull the codes you can tell if it is the connector or a leak.

Thanks for the replies guys, some top info there.

Been reading up on S2 central this afternoon (quality website btw), so I'm a little more clued up on Motronic now. Seems a lot more advanced than the Digifant system I'm used to on my previous cars (Polo G40, BMW E30).

I think my best option would be to check over the basics once more (wiring connections, induction pipes and connections), and then get myself set up with vagcom. Ive had a look on the bay and there's a ruck of different USB/ OBD leads to choose from to enable a vagcom link. Can anybody point me in the right direction as to which lead i will require, and which version of Vagcom is appropriate for my '93 ABY coupe?

          Thanks in advance.

            Get the cheapest cable.
Search VAG COM 409 Cable on e-bay.

Get the cable itself and the 2x2 adapter. Both will come up when you search.
            That's all you need really.

Boost leakage test was done with an airline first time around, but i agree it does need doing again to be sure.

Sorry for the noob questions but where can i get my hands on the VAGCOM software? I've ordered myself a cable today.

Right guys finally managed to pull the error codes using VCDS Lite. 2 codes present on the engine controller.

                    1. Engine speed sensor (G28) no signal
                    2. Idle switch shorted to ground (Intermittent).

I've just tried to remember these of the top of my head so they may not be word-perfect (started raining), I'l go back out and double check asap. What do you guys think?

Engine speed sensor will always show when engine is not running.
Idle switch error usually means your TPS connector is dirty or one of the contacts is bad there.
I had the same problem until I soldered all the contacts and cleaned the connector.
Try making a boost leak test and give that BOV to some chav.
