It's almost too cheap to even trust - if you can manufacture a turbo at that cost, it's not being done with the expertise or tooling that it needs to be. A bit like IT outsourcing... it's damn cheap for a reason, and the general 'you need 5 to replace 1' rule probably applies too
Once setup for production the cost of manufacture of a turbo is about 50% of the raw material cost. ie: Not a lot! The cost is all in the R&D/development.

Technically, it should be fairly easy (and wrong of course) to rip off someone else's design.

Some Chinese Holset clones i had i my hands uses genuine Holset bearings. Once properly (re)balanced that issue would be sorted but still the efficiency would not match OEM spec due to different tolerances.
Worst thing is that you can't see what grades of materials are used. I got scared when a magnet sticked to a supposed TiAl turbine rotor...

If it's for some silly side project where you don't care about the engine (say a std NG motor) it could be fun.

                Yup.China thing..
But where do you think most turbo repair shops get theyr rings, bushes etc??
I do not say they are good.I say expensive turbo are most of them china craps.
So,what to take?Mellet internals (mounted and ballanced by pro)that worked 500km or china new turbo that worked 3000km?That was my experience ford 1.6
You will never get a new turbo to last like an original k24 turbine,NEVER!!

All new oil pumps are made in Korea.
As long as it is not made in North Korea, you are okay though, South Korea is more economically advanced than many EU member states and more technologically advanced than most of them.
