Its an avant, iv opened the plate and looked in to a tank very full of fuel and what im guessing is the pump within near the bottom. Whats the safest and easiest way of testing the pump at this point? Thanks

On here http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/troubl...t.html#ignfuel it states "On the turbocharged engines, the fuel pump should "only" be running when you crank over the engine, usually you can hear the pump run for a moment after releasing the key from the start position." is this right for an ABY? if so it doesnt explain why it would cut out randomly while running. Is there any other things that could cut out and prevent starting?

Have a look in the fuse box, locate the fuel pump relay, pull it out, check the diagram on the relay and use a paper clip to short the appropriate pins, the pump should run. Alternatively you can prise off the cover, replace the relay and close the contacts by hand.

If it does run then maybe your cam sensor has gone, can you pull codes with vagcom or a led?

BTW thats exactly how my pump failed, ran for a few moments then stopped, would not restart. Luckily it happened at home!

It had been standing over night so 1st time this morning it almost sounded like it was going to start with a slight splutter of fuel that I'm guessing had seeped through to the engine overnight but didn't start or do this again after. Iv swapped the relay off another audi 80 variant that i know works and it does the same thing. It clicks twice as if turning on then off when in the running position, when i turn to start it turns over but does not start as if its getting no fuel with no smell of flooding after repeated attempts to start. Does this sound like a failed fuel pump? Unfortunately I'm out so no access to vagcom (think i wont be leaving that cable behind again) nor any leds. Is there anything else I can do or test before replacing the fuel pump and hoping that solves it? Thanks

If you tried th test I said, closing the relay by hand and listening for the pump and the pump did not run, then you need to replace the pump.

Thanks. I've now one on order along with a new oil pressure sensor having had to return the salvaged one to get at least one car on the road at the moment.

A new oil pressure switch, new fuel pump (which has already been replaced once in the cars life but not refitted securely) now it's all working again with a clean fuel tank in the process. thanks everyone and the advice from all.
