CT housing debate - as per Smiler's thread

Well as suggested by Thuppu I thought it might be better to throw it open to the forum...

it appears, ta Jamo, i have a stage 3 (58mm turbine wheel) with a 0.84ar Garrett housing...(one of Repo's specials...)

would a 0.63ar reduce the lag as compared to a 0.84 housing??....I understand that this will have an effect on hp...but with this in mind, the torque would come in sooner compared to the 0.84...

@Thomas - I hear what you saying about try the 0.84 and it makes sense. It's just the thought of getting it mapped only to have it remapped with a different housing in a month or 2 later....

    any ideas/feedback appreciated...

    cheers
    Mike

IMO that turbo is to small to make use of a .84 hotside on a street car. Maybe track and autobahn

The whole purpose of a turbine wheel that small is quick spool, why kill that spool with a .84 ?

Your turbo is near enough the same as a CT355 afaik and the results of Bram should give you an idea of what that turbo is like with a .63 ar and 2 bar boost which is near 500 bhp IIRC

for comparative information search posts by Repo keyword ct350 or .63

You'll find quite a bit of info

For comparison sake that hotside is bigger than the one on mine, Zlobo's and Terrybullwons CT turbo all of which run larger turbine wheels.

Send an email to kai@krbtrading.no and ask Kai what he thinks to be honest

tomorrow or wendsday i will receive at home a new CT4 5865 with billet wheel and 0.63AR with K26 hotside flange .... Kai told me this turbo is able to push 500/550WHP on 2.2 engines as he used it on a car and dynoed it

and in theory with very good spool up

that housing is not optimum for a turbo that small i.e 58mm turbine wheel for a street car

Yes he has the 95.5 crank in the 220 block small block stroker 700 plus torque

Kai's stroker has over 1000nm torque at the wheels, scandanavians are nutters

It appears my suspicions maybe true for a street car....0.63ar

I will email Kai and get his opinion....

Jamo - I have spent a bit of time searching through the 0.63/Repo route and have found quite a bit of useful info...

What EGT's are you getting using the smaller hotside ?

If I remember correctly and Bram can verify, he was seeing up to 1100C at 2.1bar at the redline on the CT355.

That was at the hotside not exhaust and he had multiple boxes, either way he's happy with the setup

Yes that was at the hotside, but repo had said that this is acceptable if run for only short bursts.

I would say easily that by reducing the boost a bit it would be within more normal EGTs, but its all down to the ECU management i suppose.

Allegedly, larger turbine wheels are producing less backpressure than small ones for the same AR turbine housing. So in any case, the CT turbos that have that (or holsets for that matter) should have less backpressure than the garretts.
