    RS2 turbo oil leak

    Hi folks,

I recently presented my car in member's cars section.
I need your advise in this issue since you know much better than me these awesome machines.

As explained in presentation post, I recently changed turbo in my RS2. It's a new stock turbo. No mods yet.

I have driven less than 1000km with this new turbo and yesterday spotted an oil leak in one of the steel tubes on top of the central body between both turbines. Hope you can see it in the picture.

Is this signal of something broken or is just a bad condition seal?

Second question: I'm planning to install a boost gauge to see if turbo pressure is right and detect any problem.
What do you think about this? http://www.ebay.de/itm/VDO-COCKPIT-W...#ht_534wt_1165

    Thanks in advance,
    Sergi

That's just a bad seal, never seen a crack in the centre section before.
This is probably due to one or both of the mating surfaces not being clean
before assembly, any dirt or bits of previous gasket will prevent a proper seal.
Either that or it just needs a few more ft/lbs of torque on the nuts to seal it.

Is it leaking oil or water as the line shown in the picture is the coolant line. The oil lines have a thin paper gasket where they mount to the turbo. The water line shown bolts to an adapter on the turbo, could be the connection or the adapter thats leaking or where it screws into the turbo.

If it is leaking oil dont drive it like that as oil on a hot turbo can cause a fire real easy.

I think it may be oil but not sure because it was too hot yesterday when I saw it. I guess if it was water it would evaporate inmediately.
I will check today with cold engine.

Assuming it's an oil leak due a bad seal. I'm plannig to buy new seals and gaskets and replace them by myself.
Is there any pressure inside the circuit or any caution to bear in mind?

Once the engine is cooled you will find the oil pressure has dropped off and there will only be a small amount of oil leak. The oil inlet line on top is the one under most pressure so that's most likely where it's leaking from.

It's alot easier to remove the oil line if the coolant line is first removed, but you will lose coolant from the system and have to top up + bleed it again.

I had to do this twice after fitting my turbo - the first time I used the old gasket by mistake, and the second time there were some tiny bits of old gasket still stuck to the flange on the oil inlet. My suggestion is remove the oil inlet line completely, use a razor blade to remove any old bits of gasket and clean it up. Buy new studs + nuts to connect it to the turbo - You can put about 20nm torque, after that it starts to stretch the stud. Text book is 15nm but I found it took 18nm, below that there was still a tiny leak.

Also note it still weeped oil the first few journeys, after that it stopped. I guess it needed to bake on

Ok, thanks a lot for such a good explanation.

It's definitely an oil leak. I touched it yesterday and it's oil.
Just one last concern, when you say bleed the coolant line i guess it's the same procedure as when removing the radiator... just fill up again the expansion diposit, start the engine and refill until it reaches max level. Is this right?

I'm sorry to ask so basic questions but I prefer to ask even stupid before breaking something.

              Thanks for your help

Hope someone can advice me in this...

This weekend I have removed all the stuff to reach comfortably to the oil line that's leaking. I have the new gasket ready to install but can't remove the old one. It's completely sticked.
Can I leave the old one and place the new one on top? Or should I remove the old one first? Is there any trick to remove the old one?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It seems the turbo oil line leak is fixed. My local audi dealer said there's no gasket replacement so I had to make my own.

I took advantage I had the airbox and wastegate out and cleaned that part of the enfine. I found an area very dirty with oil wich I thought could come from the turbo leak but now that it's fixed and clean has oil again.

It seems it's comming from the area in the red circle. Is that the head gasket?

I recently replaced both gaskets after a similar issue, having been forced to use my existing gaskets. They are avialable from Audi and they're only about £1 each Speak to someone who can actually work the parts system and get you what you need

The oil in the picture looks like the rocker cover gasket is leaking from the little cutout at the rear. Having also recently replaced this part, I can tell you in advance that it's available As a temporary fix, you could use some oil resistant sealant to repair any shrinking or damage to the seal.

My english is not bad but with all these technical stuff I'm always a bit confused...
Is this the gasket I need to replace?
