    Head Off - AGAIN

Must be getting close to double figures, the number of times I have had this off!

Mark scared me with his pistons - and they are the same as I have fitted so I had to check mine. The pictures show the burn patterns in the head quite well - the last time the car ran it was producing 30psi.

Any comments on the condition of the pistons and head?

All the pistons and alll the chambers have very similar burn patterns/colours - so this is not like Marks - where he had no1 and no5 different to the other 3.

I'd say it looks great, different from Marks but thats the way it goes sometimes. It's burning the fuel efficiently (although the mpg isnt great! ) as the plugs look in a good condition....
The pistons look in good shape and dont seem to have any specific spots of darkening which tends to point out bad detonation, so i wouldn't worry!
Was a '93 3B, Dont ask now tho......

The colour of the exhaust valves shows a good mixture. the ideal colour is best described as dark digestive biscuit.

The pistons show an even burn pattern. all looks well. The piston cut outs do look thin on your photos but they are in good condition.

I don't think you have a lot to worry about.

If you are concerned and want to be 100% sure, take the pistons out and remove the lip. You will not have anything to worry about then.

What else were you going to do this weekend?

I'm fixing a combi boiler and trying to make the house habitable so that I can move in....

              I'd rather dismantle an engine...

              swap?

I think I am going to leave my pistons alone. The pic is a close up of the edges - i think it shows there are a couple of marks in them - but no where near as bad melting as Marks.

I thought it looked good - just not sure as this is the only engine I have pulled to bits - the other times the piston markings were not as defined.

This weekend I will be refitting a head , making a double headgasket, makeing a bracket to relocate the PS pump, fitting a switchable dual map box to the ECU, fitting the modified AAN inlet manifold and all the other bits that goes with that, fitting my new air ducts in the bumper, and plumbing/wiring in the IC mister kit

Next weekend I will be fitting the turbo with a new Marco 3" downpipe and trying to get all the hoses fitted to the new IC and Inlet manifold. Then I might be able to drive the thing. Hopefully it will stay together.

I don't have time to do housey stuff - but the car has to get done before the sprog pops out, as I won't be allowed to spend all my time on the car.

Doug, head and pistons look perfect. No apparent signs of detonation.
Some of the valve pockets seem from the pictures having the sharpe outer edge slightly lowered.... Is it just the persepctive of the camera?

Anyway, as David sayed, to be 100% sure I would take the pistons out and cut that edge down.
Did the job on mine too last week. Now waiting for some bits coming down from the UK (thanks to Martyn and Greg) so I will be soon ready to put my engine back togheter

Here are a couple of pics

So you don't want to fix the boiler then?

I'm a bit late all round Greg is 9 months old now and he's not good with boilers either. Looks like I'll have to install one myself......

I've still got to extend the garage, build the workshop, build a storage shed...

                      And get the coupe working.

Mark do you have any better picture to show det. damage on the head? I was interested in seeing how it looked.
Any signs on the head gasket?

Marco, I'll take some better pics tomorrow when I clean the head up before re-fitting it. But looking at it I cant see any Det damage on #'s 1 and 5 though. I think the sharp edges of the valve cut outs took all the damage.

I was a bit pissed off and didn't check the gasket before I threw it in the bin
