Rs2 ADU with broken piston rod(s)

    Hi

(i'm sorry but my English is not perfect especially specific motor things so dont use abbreviations so i can look up pics of it on google)
I want to ask some things here, i ll be sure you guys will know it! (i could not exactly find what i need to know here some similar post for s2)

    Here i go
*I might buy an rs2 with a broken engine with the intention to "fixt it. (± 188 000km)
*I guess the car hasn't dove since a few months.
*The problem is that there is 1 or more "piston rod(s)" broken so what damage could there be let's say wost case scenario?
    * I can't do a test drive so what about the gearbox?
*Brakes, rust under, exhaust, paint, interiour i can see but im worried about the gearbox.....(can you even find one if broken) then it would become pretty expensive too

    Other thins finding parts:
At audituning.com (do they match the ADU?)
    -Piston rods
    -Pistons
-Crank case (also on ebay i think)
    -Exhaust cam
    -intake cam
    Much more i can't find

What more could i need in case of broken piston rod?
What part's can i use from an ABY engines? (these are more findable as i see)

    thx in advance!

ABY and ADU engines are near identical in terms of block.

The head has different cam and the exhaust manifold, turbo, injectors etc are different.

You will most likely want to upgrade the rods if one is broken anyway. Depending on how it has failed you may need a replacement crank (second hand about £100) The head will probably want to be rebuilt with valves where needed too.

Other than that just check for usual wear and tear, rust etc.

      Matt,

How much is the seller asking you to pay, this will help in deciding if purchasing the car is worthwhile ?

      Kind regards.

Asking price ±5 500£, and he say's the only broken thing is a piston rod but i can believe it but there ll defiantly be more damage for that price right? Al tough he says it's around 5000£ to fix. That you only know when the engine is open....
A normal price is between 12500 and 16500£ for a good one so that + all the parts that are broken...
Maybe worth mentioning: all the invoices and maintenance record are there since '01 but again first see then believe.

The block could be scrap, so you'd need a new block.
If the big end has let go, it's possible a new crank as well.

5000 for a LHD RS2 with broken engine... well, if the rest of the car is really in PERFECT condition. No rust, bodywork and paint PERFECT, then yes, it's worth it.

          Otherwise I would say no.

It depends on whether you can do the work yourself or not.

At that price, you would at least make your money back in breaking it should it come to that.

Personally I'd say allow for buying a complete ABY Engine just in case. That would be around the 900 to 1k mark with everything, even manifolds etc that you could sell on. Then all you'd need to do is swap the good bits from your engine, ie cams, water pump, exhaust and inlet manifolds, turbo etc.

Gearboxes on these things are pretty bulletproof so I'd say it would not be much of a worry.

Also, it depends what "broken" is. Bent or snapped?

If its snapped, chances are the bore will be damaged so you would have two choices, depending on whether you want to keep it standard, or up the power.

              1. Have the cylinders machined oversize. This would require new pistons, rings and connecting rods - aftermarket updated ones probably here to allow you to update power later.

              2. Get a good 2nd hand ABY block with crank and pistons etc in it. Fit your head (and water pump as ADU is different) and drive.

Both above assume your head is ok. If it is not, an ABY head is essentially the same but you would need to fit your cams, cam pulley, exhaust manifold and inlet manifold. The damage to your head would be very unlikely to affect these parts, most likely if any, there may be a bent valve but I'd think your head would be fine as a rod would most likely fail on a downward stroke.

              Hope that helps!

I would go and see but then i need to make a little day trip for it.

Most things but i will need some help.

That would be a nice option but making adjustments to the case is defiantly a job for someone else!

For short term that would be the best option: if the head is not broken i just need to fit the HEAD and Water pump? Nothing more then that?, would make it not that expensice [how much ps you should get a bit less then 315?]

ps this is the "head" right?

                Hope that helps!

Defintley worth going to see it, with a view to buying it, if the rest of the car is fine and a good one sells for the prices you have mentioned.

After all, when you have fixed it, and it’s all good, you’ll have a very nice, valuable car, i.e. a lovely RS2 to enjoy for years to come, or sell, but only if you had to.

Can’t really see you losing money in the long run if you intend to keep the car.

Post a photo of it if you go to see it, and if you buy it, make a thread to update us all on what’s actually wrong with it, and how you get on fixing it together with any requests for help, advice, or parts.

Best wishes with your “dilema”. ...

                  Kind regards.

The ABY bottom end - i.e. the block with crank and pistons etc is essentially the same as the ADU - Except early ABYs don't have the RS2s uprated bearings in the big end. The water pump is different and you need to swap this.

Yes that is the 'head' and your power will not be affected because the additional power comes from the larger turbo and the different cams, not differences in the bottom end.

As a minimum if getting a 2nd hand ABY block, I would change the shells (bearings) of the crank (main) and con rods (big ends). This is so you know you have the uprated ADU ones that are also on the later ABYs.

I will go and update my project thread now with the bearings I used (same as genuine Audi but from any supplier and cheaper as not in the Audi packaging!). Click the link in my signature for 1995 Avant...

In fact, I don't have time for the full writeup right now, but these are the shells you would want:

                      Big End: KS Bearings.

                      Mains: Glyco.

                      Thrust: Glyco.

You would want one of each part number as each is a set for the 5 pot engine.

This may seem like its getting a bit far ahead, but it will let you get pricing up front!

Also, yes machining of engine would be done by a pro! The reason I ask is that every hour of work you can do yourself, is an hour less you need to pay someone. So if you can do a lot of the work yourself then this makes it even more worth while getting the car!

A broken rod usualy means compromised block. So you should consider another compleete engine or a compleete urs4 urs6 car as a donor(they are mentaly cheap).
So use another engine, your rs2 manifolds, injectors, turbine and do the calculations.
I guess you will pay for engine change so you will get at prox 7000 eur with the car running.
As other said, the rest of the car is in good condition? If you need bumpers(cracked),headlights, mirors etc it is not wothing. If something is broken but is audi 80 compatible it should be ok,they are almost free.If it needs painting you get the math..

                          Edit:
If the rod is damaged due to bearing failure you will get with crank, rod, bearings, seals, maybe rings, maybe oil pump, head refubish and labour around 1000-1500eur.Not much difference compared to buying another engine.

Well i think thats a good price to aim for to rebuild but as always you ll end up higher.

But i ll hope to go and take a look to the car next week, it's in a garage so i ll ask if they put it up a bridge so i can see whats underneath!
In general what are the weak points from the rs2?

A first problem for every car is to check the rust . On a Rs2 you don't have to have rust at all. All rust places are usual the result of an accident .
