I did the cam cover on Steve H's engine and came across the problem of it having an oil filler cap which means they cant sit as mine! I would like to know whats going on with the coils. Could somebody with the coils sitting up do some measuring and I will measure mine up and pull some part numbers to see whats going on. Pnassy also had to machine the cam cover as per mine?

Are the RS4 and 1.8T coils different?

When i upgraded my aan cover to the 7a style cover,i discovered that there are 2 length of coils availible,i also had to drill the coil inlets thinner in diameter to make the sit nice.
On my aan cover i used the short ones without any problems.

I will try to find numbers and diameters tomorrow.

      Cheers
      Kai
      Edit:
16,4 cm are the shorter ones
17,8 cm are the longer ones.

      06B 905 115l and 06C 905 115C both 16,4cm long für 1.8t and co.

      06C 905 115l from 3.0l

      06E 905 115D from TFSI, 17,8cm long

      06E 905 115E from 3,2FSI and co, 17,8cm long

Yes, there are shorter red coil packs.

Here is my 7A cover using the taller (by 14mm) TFSI coils (with no modifications to coil pack/rubber seal).

Detail of the machined hole features.

I did the machining so as to retain all of the rubber sealing/retention features built into the coil.

Can you please check the brand and part number on your coils? Would be nice to know what the short red ones are.

for your info Thomas, I'm not sure you can get shorter red coils.....they only have them in black....

@ Steve, those coils look pretty spot on don't you think...

Just regurgitating from higher up...there are indeed shorter red coils. They were used on 3.0 from the early 2000's, and possibly others. These are what the 1.8t guys were using to bling up the bay back in the day.

                And also quoting Kai (Masterblaster)...

                06C 905 115 from 3.0l (there are different revisions)

                These are short red coils.

That said, there's been a lot of discussion regarding the longer, newer coil packs for the TFSI engines having higher performance and allowing running better gaps. So I'd stick with the longer ones. Search Audizine threads, tons of info if you can sift through the BS.

That is why so many companies sell the 'spacer' to use the longer coils on 1.8t's and such. Wouldn't make much sense if the only reason was to get red coils, since you can get short red coils and plug and play.

So you have 06C 905 115M and they are the long ones? Can you confirm length and part number?

I had them on my 1.8t a4 and mine were short, like normal 1.8t coils, but red.

Where's the beating a dead horse icon???

Short story...if you want the short red coils, get 06C 905 115M.
If you want the long red coils, get 06E 905 115E.

But just to reiterate, the shorter coils may not perform as well...

Because of the requirement for the 2.0T (FSI) to do a leaner burn, the spark must be hotter. By using these more capable coil packs, 1.8T drivers have been able to increase the gap on their spark plugs to .040" or more. This gives a stronger spark with many advantages including more complete combustion.
Even though big power has been made on the 1.8T coils, I'd hate to compromise on performance just to have them sit down further...
