    Oil Cooler Replacement

I've recently bought a 94 L S2 Avant and to get an idea of what may need doing in the near future I've had my local VW/Audi specialist give it a poke and a prod.

One of the many things they say need looking at is that the oil cooler is starting to weep and will need to be replaced sometime soon. They are quoting figures of £300ish for the oil cooler and maybe another £300 or so if the supply pipes need changing (which they say is quite likely) which seems an awful lot but they do say that they use only proper Audi parts.

What I am wondering is has anybody out there come up with a cheaper way of replacing the oil cooler such as using a Mocal one and custom made braided hoses instead of the pricey OE parts?

I think an aftermarket cooler will cost around £100 and the custom lines could cost nearly double that - depending on what ones you go for! If you are going to mod or track the car, you deffinitely need a bigger oil cooler.

Standard oil cooler for me - it is on the list of things to change.

I had to slow down on track at Combe due to oil temps climbing after a few laps.

Thanks for the tip. I've found WabtheKings posts about the aftermarket oil cooler and custom hoses in the wanted section of the forum and I've asked him for a bit more info on what parts are required.

As my S2 is a pipe and slippers Avant and I won't be track daying it I don't need an upgrade on my oil cooling, just something that is as good as the standard one and hopefully fits in place without major surgery.

I am going the OEM route. I think I paid about £130 ish for the cooler and about £150 for the pipes, and then Fitting I have been told is about 2 hours....

I don't think there is a cheap (and Good) way around things on these cars sometimes.

Personally I KNOW I feel a lot happier driving around with new OEM parts fittes as Mr Audi intended....

              Cheers,

              Steve.

Could be wrong here, but isnt the oil cooler the same as those fitted on MK1 Golf's and Beetles? or is it bigger than them?

If you want it cheaper i would suggest contacting a audi dealer in germany. They are by far the cheapest.

audi flensborg is a good place to deal.

Any Pirtek agent will be able to make hoses for a fraction of the VAG cost.

We have a Pirtek place quite local and they were the people I was thinking about for making up the new hoses.

What I need now is what size Mocal oil cooler to get and what size, length and fittings I need for the new hoses. I've only had the car for two weeks so far and I've not had the opportunity to find where the leaky oil cooler (or any other 'hidden' components) is located.
