    RS2 mods on a 200k engine?

Ok you will read this and think i am

    1)stupid

    2)worrying over nothing

The plan is to later this week fit a "new" (to me) engine in the colgate wagon, its done 200k....BUT runs absolutely sweet.

It has comprehensive history, been serviced less then every 10k miles and 30k miles ago had a new head fitted at MRC.Regular cambelt changes etc etc

It holds 5 bar cold and 1.9 bar when hot.

I have recently just finished collecting all the parts to make it RS2 spec:

    recon rs2 turbo
    new rs2 injectors
    exhaust manifold
    V-Stream chips from Paul Nugent
    3 bar map sensor
    3" straight through exhaust

    So simple question......

    Would you?

If you're doing 20k miles a year in it, then you might want to check it over but if it's a 3k a year toy and you'll service it every other week then just do it and keep your fingers crossed

Do it, make sure it works and then if it needs anything strip it and rebuild it! Or get another car and rebuild the engine for yourself or keep your engine, slowly rebuild it and then fit your nice goodies to it or.... In the words of Nike - Just Do It! You can always fix any issues when they arise!

I wouldn't do it Andy. I have a 140.000 miles ABY which with stock turbo + remap, the engine was running just lovely at 1.5 BAR pressure.
But when I put a bigger turbo (for 400 hp) the car couldn't do more than 1.2-1.5 Bar of pressure for a few seconds, then it dropped to 0.4
I took the engine a part and the valves were a disaster, the piston rings were almost done, etc

I would recommend that you at least take the head off and see what is going on in the engine and with the valves.

I have 240,000kms on my AAN with Big Turbo.I installed the GT2871 at 180,000kms.It still pulls like a rock as before.Nothing special service is required.
Normally, she's still pulling at 1,7-2,0bar nicely.

                  /\ WTF?

Personally Andy, I'd just run it. The worst that will happen is you find you need to rebuild it, which is your other option anyway! Its not like its a daily driver.. I think you'll soon see if anything is showing its age

Isn't the worst that could happen the fact that he could be looking at a new turbo, block or pistons if there is a considerable failure rather than just (potentially) some new piston rings, shells and a cleanup if he takes preventative action?

Sure if there is a catastrophic failure, but very rarely is that caused by age. If something is going to go wring with an engine its normally early in its life. At 200k its not so much of a quick tidy up more like a complete overhaul. If you are planning to rebuild it properly I can almost guarantee you will need to re-bore and put new pistons in due to oval bores, so there is the best part of £1k before you even start thinking about anything else.

IMO its all down to the condition of the bottom end, is the compression and oil pressure good etc. If its healthy i dont see an issue.

Agree, run a compression check, if results are good then the engine should be okay.

As long as its tuned properly you will avoid anything catastrophic.
Not sure if you can fit new big end shells on these by just dropping the sump but if so thats a fairly easy option for extra piece of mind
