Wow, at what power level? A while back here in finland a guy tested the strenght of the stock piston with E85, and somewhere between 850-900hp one piston broke in half just above the piston pin. Well it destroyed everything in the bottom end though.

happened to me: the spark plug melted dropping ceramic in to the engine, scoring the bore and destroying the valve seat on the way out. in other words: the damage it could do, it did do. i ended up throwing the engine away and having a new rebuilt for tuning.

Thanks everyone for the offers of help. It's off to Pete Berrys tomorrow for him to have a look at.

I could have a look at a few cursary things, but I just don't have the time!

The spark plugs all look normal and perfectly good.

Will knock heads together with JP too.

This was on a 10V BTW, more to do with detonation than power level. Hence wouldnt expect it to be the problem here.

I've melted a piston on a 10 valve, too much boost, not enough fuel, no knock sensors Was going like the clappers when it went bang though

Well; relieved and pissed of in equal measures! Pete Berry claims that it is a spark plug issue and that it compression tests fine.

It makes some sense to me in that I thought it was not firing on one pot, a coil issue or something similar.

I stupidly took the RAC man for his word, I saw him test all 5 and he said no compression on the last one. I turned it over for him whilst he put the guage in.

The plugs are NGK platinum, after hearing the bad stories about some batches of Bosch.

How can the RAC have screwed up on something quite so straighforward is beyond me...

I feel a bit of a twit, but a relieved twit!

next time(if there is one) do not let the aa or rac touch it,they are not qualified mechanics, just road side assistance(a tow home)

last week rac dropped me off a mg,which was misfiring,he said it was just the exhaust blowing!!!turned out, headgasket had gone and bent the con rod
