  • 'How-To': 13-Row Oil cooler 4 sub £70

I know a couple of people asked about this at ADI so.....

This little guide highlights where to get the parts to fit a 13-row universal Oil-cooler in the Aux Rad position behind the bonnet grill.

    You will need:
    1. One 13-row universal oil cooler with ½” BSP fittings P/N: ARA 221 (£30)
    2. One MGB ½” BSP Oil cooler hose P/N: AHH 8536 (about 27” long with one 45deg fitting and one 90deg fitting) (£12)
    3. One MGB ½” BSP Oil cooler hose P/N: AHH 8192 (about 39” long with one 45deg fitting and one 90deg fitting) (£12)

If you require the hoses with Stainless Overbraid quote the P/N with an 'S' suffix and these are £37.50 for a pair.

All three of the above items are available from these guys: http://www.mgbhive.co.uk/heating_cooling.html
    01945 700500
I did ring up to get part numbers for you but she couldnt be bothered to get all the hoses out and measure them for me so she said just quote the length and they’ll work it out

You will also need two of these:
    http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p3...duct_info.html
i got mine from a local hydraulic specialist.

Parts list for the bracket and installation (I'll need to check this):-
    • 40mm x 5 or 6mm x 350mm piece of aluminium
    • Thin metal for second bracket, ~20mm x 2mm x 100mm
    • 1 M8x25mm bolt for aux rad
    • 2 M8 washers
    • 1 M8 nylock
    • 4 or 5 rubber mounts, M6 (VAG P/No. 191 201 256)
    • 2 M6x25mm bolts
    • 10 M6 nylocks
    • 7 M6 washers

    Fitting:

Step one – Removal of old:
Remove skanky old cooler and pipes, also remove rusty fittings that are in the oil cooler housing (but save the copper washers you may need to reuse these...

    Step two – Bracketry:
Make a bracket to fit the cooler in the front. I used some aluminium stock and drilled and tapped two M8 holes to fit the bracket with cap heads to the existing Aux rad mounts, and the drilled and tapped 4 M6 holes to bolt down the cooler onto the bracket, not pretty but functional. It aint going nowhere! Unless i manage to hit a flying dog or badger or something??

Step three – Fitting of new:
Fit and fill the Oil cooler with oil. I did this as i was nervous about the quantity of oil required to fill the lines and the cooler. The Cooler will not fill and self bleed until the car is warm and up to temperature and the thermostat opens. So to help prevent oil starvation once this happens i think it is wise to fill the cooler up to the brim before fitting the new hoses.

Step Four – Attach hoses to cooler end:
Once the cooler is fitted in position and filled, the new hoses will need to be “twiddled”. Basically the orientation of the fittings on each end relative to each other is not correct for our application. So to avoid twisted hoses when fitted, you will need to clamp the fitting in a vice and twist the fitting inside the hose to the desired angle. Test fit a couple of times to get it right. Then when it is right tighten the fittings on the top of the cooler nice and tight.

Step Five – Attach Hoses to Engine end:
Firstly fit you new thread adaptors into the oil filter housing using either new copper washers or your old ones, bollock them up with a nice socket set.
Now fit your new hoses to the new fittings and tighten, it doesnt matter which hose goes where, just watever works out neatest for thepath of the hoses.

Step six – Check yourself dont break yourself!!
Make sure the oil is topped up.
Start up and check for leaks.
Run the car until the oil is nice and warm and check the oil level.

    BOOM!! Job done!!

I forgot to mention that obviously the pair of lines costs £24, for £37 you can get the same hoses but with stainless over braid.

If someone does do this can they please post part numbers for the lines they receive? In the mean time I'll dig out the invoice and see if they're on there.

Looking good mate. What are your oil temps like with different driving situations now? I fitted a larger mocal cooler to my 90Q in roughly the same possition. Im pretty sure it said on the garantee that they should be mounted by all four mounting brackets or if there was a problem they would not replace it.

I will have to keep you posted with temps, as ive only done a few hundred gentle miles since its been back on the road.

Good point with the mounts, also it should be on rubber mounts ideally although im happy that its secure. This one has no guarantee tho as it was cheap as chips.

I doubt you'll see any difference in oil temps for normal driving, it's when you're thrashing it for a longer period of time that the temperature won't rise as much. On the stock cooler, it goes up to around 130degC and stays there when on track.
