    The Final Push (Vagcom 00533)

After my battle to get the car up and running for ADI failed I am now just trying to get over the final hurdle to get the car running right before the MOT next week.

The car starts and idles better than it ever has, but as soon as I pull away it starts jolting and kangarooing as soon as I press the accelerator.

    I have run vagcom and it has come up with the following;

01247 - Activated Charcoal Filter (EVAP) System Solenoid Valve 1 (N80) (need to reconnect when i find solenoid)
    00533 - Idle Speed Regulation
    01257 - Idling Speed Stabilization Valve (N71)

So far I have only got round to cleaning the isv

Do you get black smoke as is starts kangarooing?
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

I have not seen any smoke when it kangaroos, I have just warmed it up and the revs keep hunting when i press down the accelerator, there seems to be a hint of smoke on overrun but on idle it seems fine. I am wondering if the ICV is sticking and pulling crap through the breather at maximum vacuum

This sounds similar to Lou's (220bhp) problem! After a lot of unproductive fault tracing it was finally traced to incorrect breather pipe routing. As you have had yours apart that might be a factor. See below:

If you haven't reconnected that 2 pin connector from your other thread, it is probably the evap cannister as pointed out. That will if disconnected throw that code.
Its hard to see all this stuff as its right at the back of the engine tight against the bulkhead.

The N80 Evaporative emissions control valve (solenoid) is blue and black, under the intake manifold, as shown in this AAN photo (will be the same for a 3B, ABY and ADU):

Cheers will double check the routing of engine breathers, I have misplaced my evap solenoid which is annoying!

Not quite sure what you mean by misplaced but if its not plumbed in and connected that sounds like a recipe for all kinds of odd behaviour!

I can't remember for sure ( mine's been removed ) but isn't the EVAP system conected to the vacuum tree? So if the solenoid is missing, you'll have an air leak?

                      too!

Definitely sounds like a leak in the vac pipes or a pipe mis plumbed

I removed the carbon canister last year and re plumbed the vacuum to suite. I only kept the solenoid in place to stop the faults from registering

The N80 Evaporative Emissions Control Valve is connected to the carbon canister and the intake manifold but no vacuum lines per se:

IF I have understood that correctly, then the solenoid is open without power. If so then under vacuum, it will pull fuel fumes in from the tank assuming you routed the feed from the tank to the carbon cannister directly to the solenoid.
It also implies that there is a connection between the ISV regulation and that valves operation.
So you might solve both just by connecting it electrically.
Other than that it might be worthwhile explaining how you have it hooked up.

Replaced the Idle Control Valve and it appears to solve one of the problems, it drives fine under no boost conditions but as soon as the boost comes in it starts to miss and drop out. The engine feels strong and pulls well apart from that.

It seems to be burning condensation, it is only on idle and after run. I am hoping this is just crap being burnt off from the head change. It has only been through a couple of heat cycles so far. It smells like fuel if anything.

Since I have changed all the temperature sensors the gauges seem to be a little higher

I am wondering if I have got the timing out, hence the unburnt fuel smell and the missing on boost.
