I have 5 stock coils for my 3B-ABY conversion. They are dirt cheap, and I have never known one fail. I am sure my tuner will look at them and think, 'wtf?'

Yup. It seemed a shame to waste my original, and there are plenty of 3Bs that normally get weighed-in with their coils. So I picked up the other 4 I needed for £16 IIRC.
I know one coil has been tested up to ~500bhp without too many issues, and maybe beyond. So take out the weak link that is the distributor, and can't see the coils ever being an issue.

The downside is they are a little on the heavy side.

Actually I've very recently thought about this solution, very interested in how this works out

I thought of it before I dismantled my S2, so at least 6 years ago.
I remember asking Mihnea what he thought of the idea, and he couldn't think of why it wouldn't work, even though it would 'look sh*t', in his opinion.
I see they have been fitted to my car for a while.

I don't know what you mean by that, Andy.

I should also mention that I gave up on getting the POS connectors and boots from Tyco, and in the end got them from the stealer. I am sure they cost more than the coils and POS. I think they added another £25 or so to the budget.
I also splashed out on some Magnecor leads when Bo was having a big sell off. But I can't remember how much, or what I exchanged for those.

So I am hoping to get a good spark without it having to arc its way through a rotor arm.

I have only just realised exactly what you meant, eg multiply the single 3B coil up x 5. Be interesting for others if you could post a simple wiring diagram of how it is rigged up and interfaces into the OEM power supply / coil trigger plugs? I think it is essentially similar to the LS2 based design but probably cheaper.

The fatal flaw in this 5 x 3B coil exercise is the fact that, while LS2 coils have built in Power Output Stages, the 3B coils do not. As a result, you would still have to run the pair of Bosch 351A POSs to control/fire the 3B coils. The POSs are subject to failure and are not inexpensive.

Sorry UrS4boy...but the 3B coil has the pos on it...is the small black box where the plug goes. 3 wires...+, ground and fire signal from the ecu.
5 3b coils will run perfect on AAN, ABY, ADU etc...iff there is space and ignition wires for them.

Cool, then can anyone confirm standard B4 2.0 coils are the same as the S2 coils? They look the same and are easier to get hold of, or at least cheaper.

Oh and don't think it looks ****, bit oldskool though having 5 of this size coils in a row
