    ABC v6 emissions failure help

My wifes 2.6 cabby has failed the MOT on emisssions again.I had no idea it was running so badly, every time I asked her hows the car,see says fine, why o why did I beleave her.
Had this problem last year and changed the lamdas ,cat , injectors ,fuel filter, plugs leads, coil thingy on the balk head,Idle valve. and the oil.
When I drove the car it stalls on startup a couple of times. Its a bit lumpy driving normal, but when you floor it it seems to clear itself and run ok.then when you slow down it starts to run
    a little lumpy again.
I dont think see ever drives over 50mph, and that is most likely on **** petrol.
The CO on the failure note for fast idle was 2.13, and at the second fast idle it was 1.25.
    At idle it was 1.17.
The car is running rich and you can smell it.So I am wondering what would cause this.Last year I changed the fuel filter and it made a big differance,so I am wondering is it possible that poor fuel delivery from a failing fuel pump or FPR cause a lean mix that makes the ecu over fuel.
I have tried to read the codes with no luck,so I will have to find somwhere that has full vagcome to check it out.Any help in the mean time would be much appreciated.

My ABY was running rich recently and it turned out to be the vacuum line to the FPR. Try changing the vacuum lines generally as it is quite cheap and they do break down and cause some funny symptoms. That and Clean the MAF up with some isopropanol (I usually soak mine overnight) but aerosol carb cleaner (also isopropanol) is supposed to be good too. Those would be my suggestions.

My instinct tells me it could be a vacuum leak. Maybe a split hose.
The V6 must have a air flow meter of some sort.

Im watching this thread with interest Ive got a ABC engined coupe with bad emissions.
My car was running cold and the radiator fans were seized, Ive sorted these things and now turning my attention to the emissions. Its used £60 of fuel and only done 130miles.
I havent done any of the things you have done yet (fuel filter, injectors etc) Luckily ive got another 2.6 i can use for spares tho :thumbs. By the smell i would say its running rich so the first things to check is these vacume hoses.
If i find my fault i will let you know

Just to say, I have a '99 2.6 V6 auto Cabby with 70K miles, which currently I don't drive, but it always starts even after months just sitting with the battery disconnected. When I did use it as a daily, it stated instantly and pulled hard right up to the red line, and was very energetic for what it is. Hasn't got the poke of an S2, the V6 runs out of real puff after 3k, where as the S2 is just starting at 3k after being a bit soft from idle.

The V6 is instant and keen off the line. Ultra smooth engine - in mine.

What I wanted to convey was that it is super smooth, and pulls to the red line, so yours should do the same, hopefully you find that it is as easy / inexpensive as vacuum lines, or something similar. btw, how many miles are on the engine ?.

Post the cure when you find it.

A decent recommended specialist relatively near you, may be worth the extra expense if you don't get to nail it handily ?

                Best wishes with it.

                  I think a V6 has two lambdas ?

Maybe someone can post how you check if the lambdas are working, as to replace two on a hunch is a bit expensive. There is a seller on UK ebay that is good and sells brand new Bosch ones for approx £60/70 each, iirc.

All B4 and C4 cars should have their fuel filter changes as soon as they are bought given their age now, and then that rules out that item in the future.

It will help on S2s as the fuel filter is awkward to get at and is out of sight and tends not to get changed. It can even be still the original, or very old, when the car is no longer dealer serviced, (no guarantee of goodness I know), an old fuel filter with reduced flow compared to a new one does not help to prolong the life of an old original fuel pump.

The only time my S2 left me stranded was when the fuel pump failed when I was driving. urS4boy prudently suggests to replace fuel pumps after xxxk miles as it is then only a matter of time, like russian roulette as to when they fail. Mine was approx 140k miles.

                  Just saying....

Well, you know I'm here for you buddy !

                      Sorry, just messin...

Agreed, the members should have the answer. The car will be much sweeter when the issue is sussed.

Mine is lovely, it just needs turbo and four wheel drive, and I'd use it everyday.

The car is on 1780000. Both lamdas where changed last year along with the cat, which I imagine will need to be changed again
For some unknown reason I cannot pull the codes,so I have booked it in for a proper vagcom to see if it will pull the codes.

Did the Cats and Lambdas not cost you an arm and a leg if they were new / genuine ?

                          Just wondering.

Lagz33 has the right idea if he can't or doesn't want to do it himself, you need an "Aelred".

Someone who knows these cars, and cares.

                          IMHO.
