      With this as well.

If the MAF sensor is gone it'll drive like crap down low too and idle will be bad.
If it's MAF connector it'll be on and off, not constant. Meaning re-starting the car will resume normal operation at least for a bit of time, until the connector messes up and it goes into limp mode again.

Could be fuel cut the first time, then it going into limp mode and keep cutting out due to a boost leak. Limp mode fuel cut limiter is lower.

If it cuts so much that there is no power at all and abruptly, it's deffo fuel cut which is most likely caused by a blown off or split hose.
So that's why mine had been idling rough a few months back and cleaning up MAF solved it

Thanks for that bit of info.

Do bad coil packs/spark plugs also cut boost at a certain RPM (or do they only really cause misfires?) or is this only when a boost leak is detected that boost is cut.

      Thanks

OT, hope your problem will be solved with a simple solution

Hi cottis. Lets just say its cost me a fortune ever since. The previous owner wasn't quite truthful about some matters. A good few grand lighter but the car is superb now. Good luck with hunting the prob.not sure where you are but i have a genuine VAG boost leak tester if comes to it. Ste

          I guess you've seen this.

Check / clean MAF connector first as it's easy, after that pressure test to find boost leak. If you can pull codes (not always that useful on a 3B) then do so, instructions on S2 Central how to pull codes using the "Blinks"

Really easy to replace the terminals and connector housing on the MAF plug, I just did this on my ABY loom as preventative maintenance before I use it, likewise with the MFTS

I had similar symptoms, a misfire at +/- 4k rpm with 3/4 or more throttle but sweet otherwise and it turned out to be coils. Easy fix, lots of people on here have done it.
Obviously a boost leakdown test and inspection of the hoses is your first route to persue as its free and quite likely to be the culprit.
Good luck and I hope you get it sorted soon cause it ruins a fantastic car.

Exact same symptoms on my S2 when mine was acting up, more than half or 3/4 throttle, and misfire. Coils were the culprit.

But I guess this would be boost leak or MAF related..cause a misfire is quite different to a judder.

Thought I would update this thread as only just had the car out again what with all the snow, work and a host of other things stopping me from having fun.

Located MAF, unplugged the connector and had a good look inside. Looked in fairly good order. Didn't clean it or do anything, just plugged back in and out a couple of times and went for a drive (to try and replace some golf shoes, long story but ultimately successful) to Milton Keynes, about an 80 mile round trip. I can confirm it is no longer showing the signs of boost failing around the 3800rpm mark. It boosts perfectly to the red line. This is great but did mean I used over half a tank of fuel ha ha. The roads were quiet, what I am supposed to do?

So that is about the last of the juice left on the rears, so time to put tyres on all corners, have it serviced and give it a bloody good clean now. After that, I will start using it again and look forward to taking it up to Scotland for the Open at Muirfield in the summer.

Thanks for the various suggestions and offers of help etc. I did promise in another thread to sort out some decent pics when it is cleaned up. With any luck this will happen soon but at present, my normally easy and flexible job has been busy and not so easy. Looking forward to this changing and for an increase in daylight hours in the evenings.

It would be worth cleaning the electrical contacts as that is likely what was causing your problems before

Definitely, I was also thinking of uprating the actual pins themselves. Think I saw a thread when I was initially reading up on this problem. As the car is once more purring like a hobo on crack, it is unlikely I will get round to it until the problem surfaces again. Happy boosting for now!
