Crankshaft toothed pulley - reminder why it's a service item...

Just as a reminder that the toothed pulley is a service item - replace it if you have the slightest doubt...
I was checking this area due to an oil leak I wanted to cure, thought I would change tha cambelt while I was there, this literally fell apart in my hands - although the woodruf key is perfect....
    be warned...

That happened to me as well. I've changed the cambelt waterpump etc and after 1000 km I decided to change the head gasket as well. And I had to work at the cambelt again. Imagine my surprise when I found the toothed pulley broken just like yours and the new cambelt shattered.... Man I was lucky!!!
I didn't know that it was a service item...

Wrong material choice. It's cracked due to the stress concentration of the holes and the cyclic stress of rotating at an average of about 2k rpm over its life. From teh crystalline structure shown at the crack faces, it's looks to be a brittle material. Error.

Woodruff key failed on my first S2 and replaced it with one from volcano rs and got a spare for my project engine. Never knew they were about to break like that though

I have been collecting photos of failed crank pulleys for years now and that is the first one I have seen that failed that way. It could be a bad batch. All the previous failures that I have seen, it is the integrally-cast woodruff key that fails in some way.

On my T4 I had to replace this pulley because when I was doing back up the damper pulley that sat over it, upon tightening one of the little bolts that went into it to a torque of 20nms it snapped clean in half like the first picture.... Luckily i didnt have failure on the move....
