There is a "nipple" on the toothed pulley between the (VW) and OOOO markings. There is a dimple in the harmonic damper that fits over the nipple on the toothed pulley. If the dimple/nipple are not lined up, the harmonic damper would put a twist/pull on the toothed pulley as the four allen head bolts are tightened up. Could be the issue.

I would have said thats just a marking for the front damper to be on in the correct rotation for the TDC markings on damper

Yes and no. That is so the harmonic damper (which was matched to that crank) is only installed in one particular position so as to maintain the dynamic balance that it was intended to provide due to the inherent non-balance of the inline 5. As it happens, by getting the nipple and dimple lined up, the TDC marking on the edge of the harmonic damper pulley should also be approximately correct.

Here is the external marking of the damper in action:

Things get crazy about those parts. It does not need to be a space ship one,no special extraterestrial material involved. It just have to be in good shape(or new) and all things mounted corectly.Clean bolts, clean surface between damper and it,clean surface between damper and crank to sit perpendicular, good key, corect torques at m8 bolts and crank bolt

You are right Bogdan but why risk it failures if an uprated version is available for not a lot more money?
It's the same with re-using o-rings and gaskets, if fine it's fine but i don't like hassle if they do start leaking.

It is perfect to use a better one,if available. But people get crazy now about replacing them,it is like a disease.
