The problem is my fan doesn't come on until halfway between the 3rd & 4th mark after 90 deg so I guess this is the high speed working. I thought there was a mid speed which came on just after 90 deg ?

Ok. Yes there should be a lower speed before that.
Every speed has its own realy in the fusebox. Check the relays. Let the engine run and keep your finger on the 1st speed relay. Does it click when the 1st speed should kick in? If you're uncertain about this method, use a DMM over pins 85 and 86. You should see continous 12 volts when the relay is triggered.-Comment

Although I haven't done a continuity check on the relays I did kind of rule them out by swapping all 3 of them around so the relay for each speed was in a different place. But nothing changed - only high speed and low speed for air con/after-run working. Now RS2'less

Do the DMM test so you see if the relay gets its trigger voltage from the rad temp switch.
You can also short the temp switch pins to get different speeds. If they work it's the new switch that is faulty. If the fan does not run when switch pins shorted to speed 1 then it must be something else.-Comment

I hope this is not a stupid post. But I have only been aware of two fan speeds on previous S2 coupe and present RS2.Originally posted by Pete_RS2Although I haven't done a continuity check on the relays I did kind of rule them out by swapping all 3 of them around so the relay for each speed was in a different place. The standard A/C on speed or hot engine (kick in 90oC) speed. It may have gone faster on after run but I have only triggered that at the top of a mountain pass ! And it sounds lounder and faster as the engine is off IMHOAlastair

I can only ever remember one or two speeds on my ABY S2 too?
I kicks in on 2 notches above 90deg and cylces in and out keeping the temp around the two notches over 90deg until you switch off. I think I have heard the fan when the engine is off but only when it is really hot.....
Does that sound normal.
WTF is normal??

The S2Central site says "High Speed 1" turns on at 95 deg & off at 84 deg and "High Speed 2" turns on at 102 deg & off at 91 deg. There's an additional "Low Speed" which comes on with the air con/climate and after-run.
It's the "High Speed 1" / "mid speed" (which is the one which should cycle most of the time when sitting in traffic) which isn't working on mine.Last edited by Pete_RS2; 7 April 2005, 10:54.Now RS2'less

Do not think I have ever got the car to 102oC as high speed 1 does its job. Maybe thats the reason.Originally posted by Pete_RS2The S2Central site says "High Speed 1" turns on at 95 deg & off at 84 deg and "High Speed 2" turns on at 102 deg & off at 91 deg.
