At 170k mileage I am positive that the engine needs re-drill and honing. That will require new pistons and rings.

            £7k? I assume that's including a dry sump system?

the bores will almost certainly have a wear lip at the top. So add £650 for new pistons

I've just done a complete rebuild on a 3b engine. It too required a rebore with new pistons. That alone with pistons came to £1200 give or take. I used standard pistons as they are proven to be good for over 700hp.. I've not added the total rebuild cost up yet, as there has still been bits and bobs added to the build. A rough idea to what I've bought is below. I'm home in 2 weeks time and I'll add up the receipts and update the thread. I'll also shed a tear or two when I do that exercise but, who gives a ----- it's all for the grin factor when you hit the loud pedal..

On the block I've fitted new:
              Mahle pistons & Rings
              Water pump
              Oil pump
              Bearings & shells
              ARP studs top to bottom
              Aronmatic h beam rods
              Thermostat
              Crank case seal
              Gasket set

              Head:
              Port & Polish
              New valve guides
              Exhaust manifold studs
              Inlet manifold studs
              Wagner Inlet manifold
              Wagner evo EM 2nd hand

              Sachs race clutch
              GT35r
              Oil & water line kit

Think that's it off the top of my head..

              Cheers

I did scat rods and skimmed pistons. engine work was 250 quid. rods were 200 quid. piston skim 50 quid IIRC, Arp boltws from summit racing, audi gaskets. 7a cams

id say I spent 700 or so in total on the engine.

I ran 2 bar on the sc61 turbo and had no issues on the original rings too. no honing or what have you.

there are many ways to skin a cat some being extortion others not. sat the end of the day you take it to an engine builder and they need to make a living.

in all fairness was a vague conversation that went of on tangents, but this was an outline of what he thought would be best and rough figure to work with in order for me to structure the build.

i always build a tolerance into everything i do so if is an over estimate works in my favour

Just bang a big turbo on, when it goes bang get another lower milage engine for around 6-800 quid minus loom/ecu as you already have them. Swap the good bits onto this engine, back it off slightly and sell off the spares and it won't owe you hardly anything.

430 brake has been done on a stock engine.

Either that or just swap the rods out and do a head gasget change and get a spare engine and work on that yourself whilst caning the first engine.

Probably a stupid question but if you just changed the rods for upgraded ones would you not also need to fit new bearings and grind the crank to suit?

depends on the crank condition. I used scats, weight matched and new shells. put it together and it never missed a beat with a fair few dobbins under the bonnet.
