I am new to the ecu party, and i have read my eyes out on different setups, but still can't figure out which setup would run best on a 3b 600 hp engine, and how to adjust everything.. i i'm totally lost when it comes to all the sequential fire, and sequential injectors and.. yeah.. i'm lost.. can somebody please help me, and explain what the ems should be set up to do on a i5 engine?
motronic will run your engine at that sort of power it depends if you want to pay someone to come, tune it and be happy with it till the next upgrade when you will have to pay to have it tuned again. Or if you go for an aftermarket one and learn to tune it yourself then upgrades are cheaper BUT you will learn to love having your laptop in the car at all times as you will be forever fiddling with it unless you go for a expensive and really decent ecu like some other forum members (terrybullwon springs to mind)
megasquirt is probably the cheapest and not very recommended.
vems is next and quite a few forum members run this
I'm going with Autronic SM4. I'm new to ECU's as well & I've been setting up a file for my build with spare time at work. So far, I am really impressed with the features and can't wait to tune the thing when it's finished.
i dont like autronic myself. VEMS is clean, connects easy and its cheap compared to other motronic plugged ECUs
i have to say djh post says it all. Thankfully i havent had to use my laptop for over a year now, but i would like to upgrade the firmware again at some point. Having a family and work is a bigger priority though

Why don't you like Autronic? It is a pricey unit, but it is really advanced with a lot of fail safe features and to me is really easy to configure once you know the interface. There is a plug and play adapter available for S2's but I'll be re-doing the wiring anyway.
Vems, I think vipec does a plug. Tatech dos one as well.
These are the ones I already know they can be easily plugged.
Megasquirt it off completely. Vems is almost the same - one idea better.
Tatech - I've heard good reviews. Vipec and Autronic too. The only thing - You need to find someone(or Yourself) to tune it properly....
They all can do 5 cyl but..... up to 4000rpm and not with Audi triggers..... After 4000rpm is awful. Thats why there is 2-3 which can run 5 cyl engines.
Trigger errors are only happening with 3b or 7a flywheels that don't have the enlarged pin. Even so after 1.2.2 versions of vems that problem is cured.
I don't like autronic because of bad reviews on Evo and subarus back in greece being very awful on idle, the cable connections not very good and tidy and quite a few removed them and went for other options.
I do t have personal experience with autronic though
What about NM flywheel - are they with different pin? Or We need to change them to all flywheels to resolve the trigger errors?
on several occasions VEMS ran fine with no flywheel mods. On mine it would start and not hold idle at all. The pin mod was a 5min. job from my mechanic. He matched the dual mass flywheel and it all worked fine. he did it with the flywheel on the car. However if i were to do it again, given my experience i would put them side by side and match them, then skim the flywheel i would be using to make sure the surface is straight and clean, and perhaps zero balance them.
