We have made an enhancement so that old threads should now link from search results to the correct thread. This is not yet in place for single post links
I'm with Link - which is basically V-pec. I had before KMS mp25 which is kind of OK but your every limited from setup configuration and you can't have sequential injection.
I really love how Link transformed the engine and it's giving you so much options and features that you can't even use them all... From mine experience Link is controlling the engine even better than Motronic.... After all Motronic is 25 years old technology today on the maket you can find so much better substitutes.
Don't get me wrong Motronic will do the job as well....
motronic will run your engine at that sort of power it depends if you want to pay someone to come, tune it and be happy with it till the next upgrade when you will have to pay to have it tuned again. Or if you go for an aftermarket one and learn to tune it yourself then upgrades are cheaper BUT you will learn to love having your laptop in the car at all times as you will be forever fiddling with it unless you go for a expensive and really decent ecu like some other forum members (terrybullwon springs to mind)
megasquirt is probably the cheapest and not very recommended.
vems is next and quite a few forum members run this
Wouldn't agree there. Megasquirt is an extremely capable unit with an almost infinite amount of support. The latest ms3 and with msx will give alot of higher end ecu's a serious run for their money and it's all open source. Vems was actually based on the old open source "avr?"
If you learn all the basic sensors and controls of a motor and read the manual of a few ecu's it will start to make sense and all the jargon that probably confuses you will become clear.
Get a multimeter and get into testing sensors. Continuity, resistance etc. it will help you diagnose any problems.
The most important thing with choosing an ECU is who can tune it, or who do you want to tune it? No point in getting an amazing ECU and then there is nobody in the country that knows its software! Once you have decided on the person then go for the ECU they prefer to use.

Okay, thank mate!
another question, what trigger system should a 600 hp 3b setup run? distributor ignition trough the ems or crank sensor triggered? and how do you setup the sensors and triggerwheels for a first startup?
Speak to Kai at krb about autronics
Depends what you want vems is basic in features to be honest when you compare it to other ecus
The lower level motecs are now more affordable and so is tatech now all their ecus are 32 bit
Having seen Terrybullwon ecu tatech would be my bet or nira
Your best bet however is to pick your tuner 1st and then select an ecu they can tune locally
There will always be pros and cons for any ecu

If you've got a 3b forget the stock trigger system go to 60-2 off the crank or front
of pulley
Personally I'd do it of the flywheel 60-2 though its a neat solution

You are completely wrong here.
You have no experience with tuning Motronic and you don't have the slightest clue about how an ECU works inside.
There is nothing your ECU is doing "better" than Motronic, because it is a jack of all trades and master of none.
I've tuned a few standalones on I5 now, and the stock system is MUCH better because it was specifically made for this car. Of course if you don't know how to tune it, it's useless to you.
But it is faster and more precise than almost any standalone on the market on this engine. It has three times the processing power of VEMS for example.
I get alot of good info from you guys, but please, no one should say something is better than another, i don't learn enything from a bunch of guys fighting over wich ems is the better one i'm simply trying to figure out what type of ems i should run.
Heres another Q, on an i5, should the ignition be sequential? and what about the injectors, whould they be sequential or grouped to inject fuel simultaneously at a specific turn degree? to get the most amount of power

The ignition can not be "sequential" or "non-sequential". Ignition needs to work basically.
Every cylinder must have it's own spark moment, otherwise your engine won't run.
The injectors should be sequential. All injectors firing at the same time is like going back to stone age (K-Jetronic).
It will not make a big difference for power (just like you can make a lot of power with a carburetor), but it will make a difference in drivability.
Generally on these engines - Autronic, ViPeC and VEMS seem to work quite ok.
ViPeC has much better knock control than VEMS... or you could say it actually has working knock control, where VEMS has theoretical one
Some of the scandinavian guys use the Nira ECU's, but I don't have any experience with those.
But really, if you are not going to tune it yourself, then go to a tuner and ask him what he is most familiar with and then buy that ECU. You will have the best result with that, as your map will be only as good as the tuner who is tuning it!
VEMS is by FAR the cheapest one if you want to go down and dirty. You can buy some old BMW Motronic, rip it apart and put a VEMS inside the box if you feel like doing some soldering. All together you can have a perfectly working ECU for ~350 EUR if you don't count your labor time.
Anyway, my point is - you should only choose the ECU yourself if you will tune it yourself. If not, find someone to tune it and then go from there
i could of course do it for my self i'm planning to make everything from scratch(IM, EM, roll cage, wishbone setup, glass fibre fenders and interior) so why not learn to map ?
