Yes you will loose boost through it, which will rip it further. but you will loose control of boost.

Think of it in the same way as a vacuum advance on a old distributor, if it had a split diaphragm it would not advance as the plunger would not move. A waste gate is a similar design but operates under pressure as opposed to vacuum. As the boost rises pressure in the chamber on top of the diaphragm (its actually underneath the diaphragm) pushes the waste gate open allowing the exhaust manifold to vent boost, hence controlling boost.

Whilst it may be split it will probably over boost (not sure).. (if the top chamber is vented to atmosphere) as the turbo will over come the split to a limit.

You could test all this yourself really easily..

      Hope it helps.

Just one question - why did you put the car in to the garage in the first place?

Faulty diaphragm would result in more boost than expected, as the diaphragm allows the boost pressure in the inlet to reduce the boost in the engine - it's a not a fail safe system, unless it's the N75 / WGFV that fails .

I'd cut and run from these guys or they'll bleed you dry and you'll have nothing to show for it. There are so many people who have been advised to replace this and replace that and all they had was a boost leak or any number of simple fixes that only someone who is totally familiar with these cars can fix for very little outlay. If a computer doesn't tell Audi that it's broken, then they're unlikely to be trained in fault finding on a 20 year old car. Surprised they haven't suggested a new engine

Checking the WG is really easy. Take off the cap (it's 6 nuts that are easily accessible, be careful, as it's spring loaded) and see if the rod moves up and down. It should be free moving and move about 1/2". Simple check and may save you a fortune.

Next, get a boost gauge in there. If it's a stock car, you'll have stock boost.

Next, link up your vac com cable, or buy a £5 one off ebay that works with VAG Lite and check for codes.

Final thing to try is if you only get spring boost (0.4 Bar). This involves unplugging the MFTS switch to see if that has gone bad and triggered the over-temp boost cut.

Much like yourself, i am mechanically inept, however this really is that easy.

thanks for that. the reason I never got it checked out was due to the fact the guy selling it was an Audi mechanic (audi queenstown) and a long serving forum member.

really nice guy and really helpful. he's also starting up his own euro workshop so it was in his best interest to keep things legit.

he's telling me to go elsewhere as well because he isn't sure Audi wellington are up to the task.

thats the biggest problem for me is that these cars are so rare and old that i don't have a lot of confidence in anyone! (hence all the questions on this forum) but there are lots of people saying go somewhere else or at least get a second opinion.

hoping to get the car booked into another place (an indy euro porsche place that people say are really good)

will see what they say. too be honest, driving the car, i think it drives really well but the last RS2 I'd driven was many years ago and 'in my mind' it was about the same as this one - but I've got a memory like a goldfish

Get the car out of there before it costs you a fortune, it would take maybe 45mins to check wastegate and n75 it is all easly checked

You can also just blink the codes off also. with a test light and a short bit of wire
