You have been lucky Jade, my Rs2 and few of other members rs2's would not boost if you set the timing past the mark, but it would run fine if set half tooth before.

Sorry. Nothing to do with the water pump except the belt touches both the exhaust cam sprocket and the water pump.

What I meant was the engine will start, it needs to be retarded to boost

Yes Dave you are right about that

            My logic:
You do not move one teeth. The outside sproket mark/interior key should be different compared to aan.(if you say timing should be different compared to aan)And that should make difference.Just keep the markings.
Someone with kate,is the sproket same pn aan and adu?

Hello everybody, thanks for all answers. It seems to me that, actually, the sprocket isn´t on tooth off, but half a tooth to the left. That occurs because you can´t really place the sprocket in the middle of the head´s mark. It just accomodates to the left, but it doesn´t get to the whole tooth left. Since the workshop manual doesn´t mention anything on that matter, it seems to me that this half a tooth position is the correct one and should be interpreted as acctually on the mark, though a little to the left because you actually can´t get if to fit exactly on the mark. I´m sending a photo of my car now. I should mention that I stopped having the G40 fault code like this. All thought on the matter are very welcome.

Not the clearest/sharpest photo but it looks like a whole tooth to the left to me.

the sproket is not the same as the aan one.So timing must be at marks.I never saw a car manufacturer to get timing one tooth near marking.I saw timing markings not on tdc but near markings no.
How do you know crank is at tdc(piston 1)?The marking on that slim metal part mounted on oilpump can be irelevant.(you look at it wrong or it is bend)Take cyl 1 plug off,and get a gauge in there to get the correct crank position. The markings for crank are not so good.If you get crank in the correct position it will get the cam also at marking.
One thing more could modify cam position(in fact 2 things)Belt length and water pump sproket.
Noticed another thing. The pn on your sproket vagcat says it is for aan and for adu is with "b"in the end. What is going on here?

I think the B is on the inside wheel!

                        Some checks needed:
1.Is the crank at tdc(measured with gauge to see if piston is in its higher position). To eliminate visual efects or bend metal part behind pulley problem
2.The cams are perfect aligned to head upper face? Also here visual mistake can be made. And we are talking by just a fiew degrees.
                        3.Belt same length
                        4.Water pump same sproket
5.Cam sproket adu?(maybe part in vagcat is wrong, maybe was cganged)It is painted and and screw was took off,you can see rounded hexagon
                        6.Is the exhaust cam adu?

I think i put them in the right order of "to do"

                        Regards

I guess you missed this ADU photo that I posted further up this thread (the cam sprocket has the 034109105 stamped into it just like an AAN. HOWEVER, the G40 Cam Position Sensor shutter wheel (impulse sender) has a "B" clearly stamped into it, unlike the AAN shutter wheel which has no stampings.

As PASBOGDON said have you got the right belt fitted? Rs2 belt is unique. Is the crank sensor plugged in/secure??

Just align everything and then move the cam wheel back 1/2 tooth back.
If you have correct belt ,I AM GOING TO REPEAT THIS.

Already been said by Robo, however the timing is 1/2 tooth out on the RS2.

I have personally had to correct this from 1/2 tooth one way to 1/2 tooth the other on my car. The car would start and run, but only basic boost and cam sensor fault code.

The larger water pump pulley is on the tension side of the cam belt and pulls the timing out 1/2 tooth.
