    ABY Fan to 3B

I've got an ABY radiator fan here that I want to fit to my 3B to save some space in the engine bay and get rid of the metal fan shroud.

Can someone give me a step by step how-to on fitting the fan as the wiring is different and although I've looked ay the diagrams before I've never really sussed it out.
ABY fan seems to just have 2 big terminals and 3B one has a 3 pin plug.

    Need some simple instuctions please!

    Thanks!

The wattage of the motor is the first issue I believe when using the ABY fan on a 3B. I seem to remember some have relayed the ABY unit and run a feed from the battery. I had an ABY cowl on my setup recently with an aftermarket fan fitted. I've just gone back to the 3B setup because it was plug and play and the fan was far more powerful than the one I'd bought to replace it. The 3B cowl does look pants though!

To fit the ABY setup on a 3B you've got three additional components to fit as well, the resistor pack, a heavy duty relay and a 60amp fuse + associated wiring.

The resistor pack is fitted at the bottom of the N/S wing and is needed because the 3B fan motor had the resistor inside it, hence the 3 terminal connection.

Audi fitted the relay in the aux relay panel above the driver's knees with some hefty wiring to handle the current and a 60 amp fuse.

Thanks John, my 3B also has a resistor mounted on a bolt on the fan housing is this the low speed resistor? My car did have AC.

Feed the fan with +12v from the starter with a good wire, use the three old connector wires to trigger the new 60A relay.

Feed the fan from the starter it's better than the alternator, because if you feed it from the alternator at idle and cruising when the fan starts, the rpm's goes down for less than a second and when you are driving the car it isn't very nice... from the starter you are feeding the fan from the batery, and it's a big acummulator who can solve this peak of electric consumption

I guess I need 2 x 60A relays? One for each speed? And I'll need to mount the resistor pack inbetween the relays and the fan. Is the fan powered from the resitor pack or grounded through it?

Some info about the swap in this thread mate. To be fair I didn't bother in the end, I decided to wait until my engine swap to do the upgrade using the complete ABY loom for ease and neatness

yes, If you can have 2 speeds, One relay for 1st and after run ( with the resistor between the relay and the fan, as you told) and 2nd with another relay without any resistor

You can calculate the voltage what you want on 1st gear and buy a resistor to low the voltage, for example from 14v to 10v
