I finally had the energy to take a look at it. Went to the shelf of old used "good to have" stuff and replaced the POS...... and wohoo it actually started up again. Although a just noticeable idle hick-up, but I suppose that the plugs are a bit sooty so when I have the opportunity I will give it a proper WOT 
.
I suppose that the water is running somewhere down where the ECU is located because I could sense a damp carpet on that side, although not much.
