Nice read about Precision turbo's. Apparantly China crap fitting Garrett housings with Turbines still having Turbonetics branded on them from the mold: http://www.turbodirect.co.za/site/in...=778&Itemid=21

As with most things, I am sure the Chinese can build a turbo just as well as everyone else, but it wouldn't be any cheaper. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The only thing I can see from this thread is that you are able to save yourself a few hundred quid on buying a chinese turbo.... In the not to distant future you may well be having to spend a few more hundred in having to repair the damage it is likely to cause and then a few more hundred on another new turbo to replace the new chinese one that broke. These arent TV's or DVD players. They are machines.

Dont take me wrong, i know that quality parts have their prices, and for my hipower build, i bought the best part i could afford. But have any one direct feedback about this products ? or a way to test with appropiate tools ? I think i can "risk" 500$ for the sake of "science". Also put it this way, this would mean an affordable way to build 450/500hp DD , without paying for upgrade more than you pay for the car itself.

Usually I agree that cost cutting can be done in places. But in the case of a turbo it isn't just the turbo itself to worry about. Spend time and money building an engine, turbo goes pop and ruins it. Not going to be the $500 test that was hoped for....

I really dont think that the price 100% reflect the quality of the product, maybe more the R&D costs ? (you can find the same basic design from 500$ to 2500$)
I am not willing to test the turbo on my car, as really is not relevant, but if some one has the tools / time to test it i happily buy a test unit. :-)

theres a video on youtube somewhere that im sure was posted on here of a garrett or maybe holset being pushed to its limits, there was a small flash and the turbo died. the cheep chinese unit that came next nearly took the windows of the test booth out in a major explosion

Well. As you asked.... the car was smoking, i changed the seal on the turbo,as it was a simple easy job, but the car still smoked.
I have now had valve guides and seals changed and the smoke has gone.
When I bought the engine i was told it had had a head refresh

Well it has now. This cost 5x as much as the turbo.

                    .
But I can. Ive allready had my ÂŁ150 of fun from the turbo. Anything more is a bonus,No?

But a TV/ DVD player is way more complex than a turbo. I do however agree that they are probably not to be trusted at the kind of boost a billet wheel would do,but then youd probably be going out of the efficency zone anyway.
For me its working. Id be upset if id spent ÂŁ750 on a K27 rebuild which has more chance of failing.

I think cummins and holset have them,

They were doing burst tests in the videos

sorry I'll make it clear, it was a chinese one on my car that fell apart after 5 mile, the two van reconditioned turbos from AET were garretts but i bet they use chinese ÂŁ22 bearing/seal kit off ebay to recon them.
coincidence both lasted around the same life span. (3 months)

my car now runs genuine garrett gt3071r done over 20k miles on 28psi most of the time an still perfect.
the iveco van now has a genuine OE garrett and is perfect too after 30kmiles.
in my experiences it is false economy buying a recon turbo,
a chinese turbo or a turbo off AET yorkshire and i will never again do it, but everyone to there own. my advice would be pay the extra for genuine turbos.
ps, the car engine block was scored so much it was scrap.
if any debris off the turbo goes in
                        = rebore+ pistons= repair head/valves= big money

I used a core from China to rebuild a Vnt turbocharger :gt1749va abd after 30.000 km is still ok. For the money that I payed for is more than ok.
I seen a bmw e30 325i with a chinese turbo and did 300 bhp on the rolling road.
I think that the balancing of the chinese turbochargers is not very well made from the factory . Alot of stuff is made in China. Depends how much you pay: 1 pence or 500 pounds and the expectations will be the same.

i guess it is not how much bhp it makes or how many miles it will last, but how it will brake!! if the bits will be flying into your engine, which you rebuild it spending your hard earned cash and you changed every seal and bolt etc on it. and no matter when but it will ruin everything that will be disaster, at least for me... but we all are different
and have different amounts to spend on it and different priorities.

Any turbocharger will break in many piecesand doesn't matter who made the turbocharger because of the speed of empellers . A good turbocharger will be better balanced and will be build using better materials.
Is fake what you say. A turbocharger thaT runs lower boost will be more reliable than one that runs on top limit of boost pressure or over the limit. Do you agree?
