Aux water pump question

When it operates with the engine off, should I expect to see coolant returning to the tank from the top little return pipe?

If it's any help the pump works in the opposite direction to the regular waterpump. I'll check mine next time I'm out in it, I have the lower temp switch on so it comes on every time.

I was looking at something else today and it caught my eye that while the fabs were on and I could 'feel' water going through the 2 pipes the pump is connected to, there was no return on the tank. Somehow I was under the impression that this was the case. I'm probably wrong so a confirmation would be nice.

I checked this last night and I didn't see anything returning to the header tank.
