    wastegate qusestion

hi all i am rebuilding a aby to run hopefully about 550 bhp now my question is will a standard wastegate cope with i think its 25psi boost ? can you get stronger springs for it ect .

or plan b i have a tial one whitch needs to be retro fitted to fit .

    Tial V60 Wastegate 60mm 44mm 38mm

or is this one too big ?

44mm be best, you can use the 60mm but you may find boost hard to control as the graduation steps let out a lot of gas at that size

Yes. Lots of big power cars run fine with stock gate.

What turbo are you using. Lots of people can make 2 bar boost on stock spring. But that depends on many things. A 1 bar spring might work better.

As that turbine is small relative to the compressor you will have loads of turbine drive pressure so the small stock wastegate will be able to bypass the required flow easier. I would fit a 1 bar spring as the turbine drive pressure will be so high that you will push open the stock spring.

Will be interesting what this turbo preforms like on your engine. 550bhp is a difficult power level on Garrett turbos. Your sorta between sizes. If you could of put up with a bit less eg an easy 525bhp then the gtx3071r would be better. For 600bhp a gtx3576r. The gtx3076 is sorta a possible problem turbo as the compressor can flow so much more than the turbine. But will be interesting. What ar housing are you using. You will need at least 0.82 but a 1.02 might help the small turbine for top end power.

Yes but I wouldn't advise it, the wastegates are very old and many are worn seems daft to skimp on that when you've got the manifold and turbo. I run the same manifold with a turbosmart wastegate.

you could get a stock one refurbed but it's the same price as a new style wastegate!

I had major boost issues with the stock wastegate

power really has nothing to do with a wastegate it's control of gas flow around the turbine.

A wastegate does more work with a smaller turbo imo, the quicker you come on boost the more control you need to bypass the turbine to stop overboost and regualte boost levels.

Big turbos the wastegate does ****** all until it comes on song later in the rev range

what boost are you running and bhp you getting ?

Just try your stock one before you get carried away. Check your stock one is serviceable and give it ago. As I say you will have high back pressures with this turbo when pushed so the realitivly small stock wastegate will cope easily. Assuming its in good order.
