The gearbox really is the let-down of the RS6 for me. Its so slow and cant seem to decide what to di. And it really does suck fuel, which i didnt mind until it hit 1.45 for V-power and my missus started using it as her daily!

I took it for a quick spin this evening and i must admit in semi auto mode it's alot better, plus its not slipping and much smoother on changes. and sounds fantastic.

Do wait for one with a very recent gearbox. Mine was done a few years back and is giving me some harsh changes, a bit of slip, and the dreaded torque converter code... That'll be 3.5k please! You could do an engine rebuild for that on the S2. I cant afford it hence its got an easy life with the missus, it behaves when she deives it.

Still its the RS2 i find has the fun factor, its really cheap to run and easy to work onin comparison, the RS6 wil go soon for something more affordable to run, its just difficult to think what even remotely conpares to it.

3k without a rebuild is possible. Bolt a big turbo on, change the clutch and ic and exhaust and get it mapped.

3k for a full rebuild? dream on sunshine. As soon as you open up that engine you will find a lot of things unexpected, for example if it has worn bores & you then have to go oversize pistons and block bore, then as you've opened it up you need rods, because of this you need balancing..... it goes on

The best one for you budget is rs2 or k26/k27 and aim at 360-400 so that you don't open up the engine else plan like Rusty says for 6k and then be happy if it comes in under budget.

The other factor is are you doing it yourself or paying someone to build it as that will take a chunk out th ebudget as well

My bottom end, clutch and head refresh is about 3k doing a mixture of pro and DIY. Add 500 to that for a flowed head upgrade and another 350 for a rebore (i bought a spare block for 400 with low miles, so fingers crossed). Add 100 for this, 100 for that... From someone like JP, you're looking at 5k drop off pick up service, maybe including fitting depending on spec.

5k for a drop off and collect service would be lovely

personally if it happened I would try and do as much as possible myself however I would definitely be dropping the block , rods , pistons , head with jp - so I could see the cost spiraling

I think I already have the answer

You guys got some crazy prices.

For 3k over here the head will be skimmed, block decked, the engine blueprinted, head rebuilt (no tuning), and will include bits and bobs, and all labor, and pocket about 1k
                    This all done properly.

If it needs a rebore and pistons then it'll be more expensive though, due to price of pistons - and then might as well due a full engine build incl. low compression pistons and rods.

If the engine hasn't got a lot of miles on it, you can often get away with valve stem seals, rings, shells, and that can be done for 1.5k over here.
There's literally no point doing a full engine build with changing pistons and so on unless you plan on going higher than 450 hp. That's just a waste of money imo, you're not getting a lot of bang for the buck.

It's amazing how hard it is to find people to do it properly at those prices too! I've heard of 3 people in the country that I'd trust

Drop off, pick up service was just for the engine, no turbo, EM, IC, injectors, exhaust or mapping but you could then run over 500bhp on it all day long

It depends how involved you want to be as to the cost. Plus, as Jamo said, when you open pandora'd box you might find some expensive surprised in there...

First rebuild came in at £2998. It included a chunk of other work too but I supplied parts - about £800 from VAGparts (RIP). Looking back it was a bargain as i didnt do anything other than drop off cars and parts. That included a rebore and oversize pistons as it needed it. On top of that I soent a fortune on some performance goodies...

                          2nd/3rd/rumored 4th I'm not talking about.

The last rebuild... i did alot of work myself with help of forum members in short, budget 2k for a full rebuild with parts. Another 6-700 if it needs rebore and pistons. Then add the extras you want, +4-500 for port/polish, +500 for rods and balance, +300 clutch, etc. And +whatever for your choice of EM, turbo, injectors. And +any other bits you replace while the engine is out. You will be stripping it down and refitting all ancillaries and the engine too, but thats part of the fun!

In short, an 450hp build in parts alone is going to be 2.5-3k base. Depending on how much you can do yourself Id say 1-2k for labour, plus mapping.

It's peanuts compared to the RS6 though, last service (thankfully before i bought it) cost £7500. Did include new turbo's.

Rs6 isn't the only option for me , its just one on my wanted list , and sure there expensive but so is the s2 especially if I keep it

all the engine in and out work I can do , its the purchase price of parts and the balancing, headwork and re bore that I have to consider and with few choices of trusted places I know where I would want the work carried out

question is do I really want to do it all (the rebuild so far has been an uphill battle / 3kids/ wife! etc

if the engine seems good for 400hp.

                              change turbo and manifold.
                              fit fuel pump
                              fit 3" system
fit ecu or have map and injectors.

                              on aby that's 400hp.

remember brakers and suspension keep you on the road.

I'm afraid owning the RS6 has altered my opinion, the RS2 is now a cheap car to own in comparison! Everything is 2-5x the price and loads more to go wrong too... But if you've always wanted one I'd say do it

If you can do all the work yourself its a big advantage. I understand the wife/kids, theres a reason it took 2-3 months for me to complete the work! What are you starting with now? Car upgrades, engine condition/mileage, recent work etc. I bought my RS2 cheap as it factored in alot of work. It made sense to rebuild it in full. But the S2 i sold was great, everything recent and 95k on the stock motor. I would have happily bolted on some RS2 goodies and mapped it without a full rebuild. My RS2 ran 375hp for 100,000 miles and 315hp for 60,000 miles before that...
