Changing the fuel pump on my s4 1993 2.2 turbo. Don't know when it was last done and it is cutting out after a short time. Starts again after a minute but I don't suspect anything else. No misfires just dies. What is the best one to get and where from.

Could also be a flaky G40 Cam sensor:

Going to a Bosch 040 or 044 requires going to the 60 mm V8 fuel pump basket (and not the 43 mm V8 basket).

Having read the posts about the g40 sensor I am beginning to suspect it. I would expect to see a fault code in the vcds. Will check that first.

Sometimes a flaky G40 will not dump a failure code. If you get a G40 failure code, it will be a version of this:

•2113 (Blink Fault Code), 00515 VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number
(G40) Hall sensor in distributor (3B, early AAN engines) or camshaft position Hall Effect sensor later S4/S6 AAN engine). Distributor alignment, faulty sender, Mis-located sensor & distributor, Cam timing possibly incorrect on AAN engine, Check lower Crankshaft Gear keyway

            OR this (from Irish S2)

Just pulled the codes and there was only a fault for number 5 injector. There is some tape on the electrical plug so there maybe a faulty connection but this would not cause the engine to die. Is there a way to measure the resistance of the g40 to see if it is defective.

No but if you read my G40 link, you will find a method to check its function with an LED.

If the ecu is not logging a fault code when interrogated by vcds will it give me a blink code.

Yes. You should get a 4444 = all clear blink code.

•4444, (Blink Fault Code) 00000 VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number
                    No Faults have been recorded

Here is a procedure to blink out the codes. However, it assumes that there is a check engine light in the instrument cluster (should show when you just turn the ignition key to ON, before starting the engine - goes out when the engine starts). No CEL, you will need to add a light into the equation:
