    TDI Troubles

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ive put this on Classic Audi but think i'll have just as much help on here as everyone with a S2 seems to have a dag dag

Got a problem with my 80 tdi After changing the heater matrix for the second time (and it still aint right ) the engine check light has come on (it comes on a minute or so after ive started the car)

The codes that have come up are

    00550 start of injection regulation
    00526 brake light switch

Don't know if its coincidence or related to me doing the matrix????
After doing some research I found people had both these codes come up together but I never found out the cure.
Been on the ross-tech website and found things to check but so far nothing has worked.

The car had been run on veggi oil? before I got it so I changed the fuel filter, thinking it may be blocked, checked all the electrical connections. removed the ecu from its holder thinking it would have a pipe attached to it for boost/vacuum and I had trapped it but there is no pipe on the ecu.

Has anyone experienced this or got some suggestions of what I need to check and how to check items. (injection pump, 3rd injector etc)

    Bump and more info.

Well I changed the brake switch and things have slightly changed. Now when I start and drive the car the engine check light doesn't come on but the car seems like it is in limp mode. Very noisy and doesn't pull.

Im thinking the timing has slipped on the cam sprocket, I will be checking the timing belt marks tomo (weather permitting) what I have found is you can check the pump timing on VAG-COM (I cant do it as ive only got the free version) is there anyone in Somerset who has got the full version and would be willing to help me out.

Mate check the timing. And check also the brakes switch connector.
If you adjust the timing in the right way it will go with all 90 BHP

pretty sure the brake connector / switch is all good

ive got no special tools for doing the timing, will I be able to do it (rear camshaft tool) with a flat bit of metal and feeler gauges?

no chance of 90 BHP its got 230k on the clock

The first code means your pump timing Is too far advanced in my experience.

IF you have enought experience you can use something that comes handy and holds the camshaft where it should be.

Not the right way to do it without proper tools but sometimes you need to use what you have allready .

would that mean a quick tweek of the injection pump? or check timing belt, then tweek pump?
suppose checking the belt timing is first thing to do.

I would set up the basic timing first and then see if the pump needs a tweak.

Well I took the rocker cover off today and timed the engine up. I split the 0 on the flywheel and looked at the back of the camshaft, it seems to be slightly of centre so to speak. The picture doesn't really show it.

Didn't have the round pin for the pump timing so don't know if that's out.

I will be getting the correct timing tools tomo from a work mate.

Im pretty sure the timing is slightly out, hopefully tomo evening I will be able to tell.

Your cam timing looks fine from.photo. you can use an 8 or 10 mm drill bit for pump.
I think its 8. Can you plot your timing with vcds on your engine?
If not its time to find someone with a dial gauge and adaptor.

Check the brake switch and ensure its switching off properly when your foot is off the pedal. TDI's go to zero power mode if the vehicle sees both the brake and throttle pedals pressed at the same time aka left foot braking.

Well when I press the brake pedal the lights come on and go off when not pressed. Ive changed the main switch anyway.

Tonight ive made sure the timing was correct, which it was Marked the injection pump and moved the pump about 1mm each way but the fault is still there.

Ideally I need someone with the full VAG-COM so I can set it up correctly. Anyone in the south west / Taunton, Somerset area that can help

did you replace the brake light switch with genuine, as you stated you need someone with vcds to save a lot of guess work.

It was a genuine switch from a car im breaking, got loads of them so will try another one.
We have got a Snap On Solus at work, would I be able to use that to set the pump up?
