Low power down low \ Black smoke \ stuttering \ hunting idle \ all things fun

hiya, been a while since I've posted about the car

current issue (which has probably always been there)

    - low revs (just rolling \ in stop start traffic etc) = lack of power \ torque . if I give it more gas to get it going it puffs black smoke and then we are away. but it's not happy down low thats for sure!

    - there is also a flat spot around 4k if I just give it a small amount of throttle from stand still - power comes on (not turbo power) then flattens out all the way to red line if I let it . If I floor it from 2 , 3, 4k , the turbo kicks in and it's happier - but I can't really go round driving foot flat all the time. or can I ?

    - full throttle , black smoke

    - when cold (mornings) seems to hunt on idle (500 > 1000 lump when idling). so at traffic lights its just making a song and dance

So it's pretty awful when driving home in traffic and up hills. Loads of smoke, almost stalling , slight bunny hops and an all round classy look. and in the morning its not doing well as well!

    Audi are going to

    - get new O2 sensor
    - new plugs
    - get injectors out to test spray pattern (it was sitting for 3 years doing nothing and they had to un-seize the injectors before the last guy got it on the road - their words)

Anyone have any thoughts? Seen this before? Are we on the right track for a cure!

    Thanks so much!

      Possibilities:

      1. G62 Coolant temp sensor is Fk'd
      2. MAF is Fk'd
      3. One or more of your injectors are stuck open/not fully closing.

So looking hard at the injectors is a good idea.

Other info here (click on the G62 and MAF labels)

audi have pulled codes and the only one they mentioned was an engine speed sensor which has since been replaced.

I'll flick them feedback from this forum (which they totally hate) but I'm hoping they read and take on board

        thanks!

Apologies in advance, this might hurt (consider it "tough love") :

You are doomed to be hosed by the dealership trying to fix this problem if you have no clue as to how your RS2 works. For example, the G28 engine speed sensor *ALWAYS* throws a false positive error code *IF* the codes are pulled with the engine stopped. You just paid $$$ to have a very likely good sensor replaced with a new one (so they say) with no positive benefit to you or your RS2.

If you let them go through a trial and error "solutions" , you are going to have a much lighter wallet before you are done - assuming that they actually figure out the problem before you run out of money.

Are there no after-market Euro-oriented mechanics shops with Audi experience in your area? What about contacting Nik G?

Thanks, there are a few places around but I'm not sure if they'd be any better? its possible they couldn't be any worse!?

at the moment i"m going with the devil you know... and there is only 1 other RS2 in Wellington (where I live ) and Audi service this as well and this is meant to be running properly.

Audi have some parts coming in so this could be their last chance.

and just been out to lunch and all the same issues , the thing is running like a pig and seemingly getting worse. it’s getting pretty frustrating!

and an added stall when coming to a stop and in neutral when the engine speed just dropped so low it stalled.

            grrrrrrrrr

I did triple check with them about the speed sensor before it was installed a few months ago asking if they got the error when the car was running and they confirmed they did.

            sigh....

              honestly,

start doing research and you will know more about the car then they ever could.

it's not hard and your wallet will thank you in the long run.

buy a ross tech cable, the forum is far superior for helping with problems than audi ever could be (imo)

actually, I've already got one of those for the RS4! it's been ages since i've used it!

is there an easy how to (what version of the software etc etc)

I think I got the free version to log errors (this would have been 4 years ago) , so I'm assuming things have changed?

Yeah I believe its the same as my urs4 which uses the white/black connection converter.

Maybe someone can chime in but just buy the full version ($400).

You really should have it as you have an rs4 too, don't you?

Vcds firmware is in the cable. Need a laptop/notebook and I think XP works best.. its what I use.

Might have to update it but you download the software for free off the rosstech website

Actually, re-reading the symptoms, it could also be a boost leak after the MAF causing the rich-running due to missing air that the MAF told the ECU expect.

                            Try this: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...e+leak+testing

At a minimum you should install a boost gauge, just have it in the glovebox if you're worried about mounting it anywhere.

Forgot.. are you melb or nz?
