As a comparison are all I5 engines the same I,e 2.3 the same as our 2.2 I have just acquired a NG or 7a engine not sure of engine code yet for nowt, and was wondering would all the ancillaries of my engine bolt straight on if so I would like to do up the engine to look as good as some of the ones on here. I already have loads of new bits and bobs which I have been collecting form the stealers before they go extinct. Would be a nice project for over the winter.

The block itself is pretty much identical apart from the larger bore diameter and the crank is the same, however everything else is different. So the only satisfactory way to use it for an S2 engine would be to fully rebuild it with custom pistons and all new internals apart from the crank and maybe oil pump.
I have an NG block as my spare, if I ever press it in to service I'll be going the Eastern European ghetto stroker route, Supra pistons and BMW rods with the crank reground to suit giving approx 2.4l. If I had more money I'd be doing this regardless.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

IIRC you have an ABY Ray?
If so you will find there are a few subtle differences. 7A can be used as it has the piston cooling jets. IIRC the NG does not and therefore is not suitable for FI use.
If you use a 7A you will need new pistons, and you will need to use the earlier 7A/3B oil pump, water pump and timing belt arrangement is there is no mounting on the 7A/3B block for the ABY/AAN tensioner. Crank is the same. HTH

Cheers Alex
I am in two minds whether to buy a little run around as Im only doing 16miles a day back and fro work and it just sits on the drive all w/end as I drive artics for a living w/ends the little lady ferries me around in her S3 I just bought her
so thinking put in the garage and strip it all down and build it back up replacing bits and bobs as I go along plus a nice paint job on the block, I don't think I need a complete re-build as the car as only got 120,000 on the clock and apart from little niggles runs sweet. So I think I will leave the engine in my mates garage.

no need to pull it apart unless you want to add rods or solve problems
If it runs well I'd leave it be. You can do a really amazing clean-up though like Tom's RS America without opening the engine
